Ramayana Producer Defends New York Teaser Launch Amid Fan Debate
The decision to unveil the highly anticipated teaser for the epic film Ramayana in New York City rather than in India has ignited a spirited discussion among fans and followers of Indian cinema. In response to the growing controversy, producer Namit Malhotra has stepped forward to address the concerns directly, calling for unity and a broader perspective on the film's global ambitions.
Malhotra's Call for Unity and Global Vision
Addressing the media regarding the overseas launch, Malhotra emphasized the importance of avoiding division. "This is not the time to be divisive," he stated firmly. He highlighted the emotional connection of the Indian diaspora in the United States, noting, "The Indian in America are thanking and appreciating us for having an event in the US. You need to understand the emotion of the Indian people over there."
Malhotra elaborated on the film's overarching goal, stressing its universal appeal. "There are Indians all over the world. We should not be divisive; that's where we go wrong on Ramayana. There's no division, it's one world, one Ramayana and one Rama," he declared, reinforcing the message of inclusivity and shared cultural heritage.
Director Nitesh Tiwari Explains the Strategic Move
Director Nitesh Tiwari also weighed in on the decision, responding to fan expectations for an Indian launch. "I'll pass on the message to the producer," he quipped, acknowledging the feedback. He further explained the strategic reasoning behind choosing New York for the first major event. "For India, you need a special occasion," Tiwari noted, hinting at future plans tailored for the domestic audience.
Commitment to Authenticity in Portraying Ramayana
Tiwari addressed the immense responsibility of adapting the revered epic, acknowledging its deep emotional significance. "You understand the sensitivity and attachment for Ramayana, you keep those things in mind," he said. He expressed confidence in the film's authenticity, particularly in the portrayal of Lord Rama by Ranbir Kapoor. "We've taken care in portraying Lord Rama. It's very authentic is what I feel," Tiwari affirmed. When asked if Kapoor was always the first choice for the role, he simply replied, "Yes."
Global Ambitions and Breaking Western Barriers
Malhotra reiterated the vision to transcend domestic boundaries and reach a worldwide audience. "The idea is to show it to the entire world. How do we bring awareness? Every Indian knows it about Ramayana," he explained. He pointed out a historical challenge for Indian cinema, stating, "We want to take Ramayana to the world. In 100-plus years of films, we've never made a mark in the West. It's not that our films are any less; we make outstanding films."
Balancing Promotions During Production
On the topic of promotional activities while the film is still in production, Malhotra shared insights into the logistical challenges. "I want to make sure that everybody should know about Ramayana," he said. "It's harder for us in the middle of the shoot to stop work and go and meet people and spread awareness; we are not selling tickets," he added, clarifying that current efforts are focused on building anticipation rather than direct marketing.
Addressing Fan Expectations and Patience
Malhotra also responded to fan queries about the absence of a Hanuman reveal on Hanuman Jayanti. "We will show you the entire Ramayana if it was ready," he remarked. He urged patience, saying, "People told us on Ram Navami that we should do it. We never announced that we are coming on Ram Navami. I respect your sentiment. Keep some patience, we will bring out other things too."
Film Details and Release Plans
The teaser for Ramayana introduces Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Rama, alongside co-stars Sai Pallavi and Yash. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film is conceived as a two-part epic saga. The first installment is scheduled for release during the Diwali festival period, aiming to captivate audiences with its grand narrative and visual spectacle.
