Rathna Kumar Makes Directorial Comeback with Romantic Feature '29'

After a significant break from direction, acclaimed filmmaker Rathna Kumar is poised for a major return with his upcoming romantic feature film titled '29'. The project has already generated substantial buzz within the industry, thanks to its intriguing concept, fresh cast lineup, and emotionally resonant storyline. As the release date approaches, Kumar has opened up about various aspects of his career, including unused scripts and his collaborative experiences with prominent director Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Behind the Scenes: The Evolution of Leo's Interval Block

In a revealing interview with Galatta, Rathna Kumar shared fascinating behind-the-scenes details about the interval block in the blockbuster film 'Leo'. He disclosed that the original concept was substantially different in both tone and structural execution. "The initial idea involved a moment where someone exclaimed, 'Leo is still alive,' prompting approximately fifty people to rush toward his photograph," Kumar explained. However, director Lokesh Kanagaraj later reimagined this scene into a more intense and impactful version.

Kumar elaborated, "Lokesh transformed the scene into one where the photo is dramatically broken, revealing the old image of Leo Das." This alteration significantly enhanced the emotional weight and cinematic power of the interval moment. He further noted, "The revised version carried greater impact and emotion, aligning more effectively with the film's overall world-building." The final iteration added considerable depth, making it a memorable highlight of the movie.

Collaborative Ventures and Creative Differences with Lokesh Kanagaraj

Rathna Kumar also spoke candidly about his earlier collaborative plans with Lokesh Kanagaraj. He revealed that he was originally slated to direct a script penned by Kanagaraj, which incorporated horror elements. "Lawrence's master appreciated the concept, but he questioned whether another horror film was necessary, given audience expectations associated with Lawrence," Kumar recounted. Subsequently, Kanagaraj presented another idea, but Kumar found himself unable to fully connect with it on a creative level.

"I informed Lokesh that I pursued it primarily because he wanted to make a film, but it lacked a personal touch—there was no soul in it for me," he explained, detailing his decision to step back from the project. This honest reflection underscores the importance of creative alignment and personal investment in filmmaking.

The Genesis of '29': A Return to Authentic Storytelling

Following these discussions, Lokesh Kanagaraj encouraged Rathna Kumar to focus on narratives that truly resonated with his artistic vision. This advice catalyzed the development of '29', a rural romantic entertainer featuring actors Vidhu and Preethi Asrani. The film boasts music by Sean Roldan and is supported by a robust technical team, promising a high-quality cinematic experience.

Additionally, Kumar shared an anecdote about a rural mass script he once pitched to superstar Vijay. "The actor personally called me to express interest, but the project could not proceed due to prior commitments," he revealed. With '29', Kumar now returns to the director's chair with a fresh, emotionally charged story that authentically reflects his creative voice, marking a significant milestone in his career resurgence.
