Riteish Deshmukh Embarks on Cinematic Journey with Raja Shivaji

Riteish Deshmukh is poised to bring the legendary story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to audiences worldwide through his highly ambitious directorial project, Raja Shivaji. For the accomplished actor and filmmaker, this cinematic endeavor transcends mere entertainment; it represents a profoundly personal voyage deeply connected to his Maharashtrian heritage and cultural roots.

A Legacy of Inspiration and Responsibility

In an exclusive conversation with Variety, Riteish Deshmukh elaborated on the enduring impact of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. "Growing up in a Marathi family, we were immersed in tales of his valor from a young age," he revealed. "His relevance persists powerfully even in contemporary times. I firmly believe there is no comparable figure globally—not among spiritual leaders or deities, but a king who lived nearly 350 years ago. Today, people remain willing to sacrifice everything for him. His everlasting legacy continues to inspire generations, motivating them toward greatness."

Expanding Scale Beyond Regional Boundaries

Raja Shivaji is being crafted as a large-scale cinematic spectacle designed to resonate beyond traditional Marathi cinema confines. Deshmukh disclosed that the project is structured as a Marathi bilingual film, with active plans to extend into additional languages to maximize its reach.

"We aimed to elevate the scale significantly," he explained. "Marathi films often face limitations in scope, yet Maharashtra boasts approximately 12 crore residents, including around 10 crore Marathi speakers. This demographic surpasses many states and even countries. However, box-office figures haven't fully reflected this potential, despite successes like 'Sairat,' 'Lai Bhaari,' and 'Ved.' I intend to harness the substantial business capacity Maharashtra offers."

He emphasized that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is revered across India, and the film will explore unique dimensions of his life. "We delve into his formative influences and childhood, tracing his evolution from observer to inquisitive thinker to decisive leader. This narrative explores a distinct aspect of his persona—not merely a historical epic but also a familial saga highlighting his roles as father, son, husband, and brother."

A Spiritual and Humbling Filmmaking Experience

Describing the production process, Riteish Deshmukh characterized it as an intensely humbling journey. "He passed away at just 50, yet accomplished extraordinary feats," he reflected. "Condensing his life into two and a half to three hours is challenging, as he lived with immense intensity daily. While I grappled with logistical issues like mountain locations and unit coordination, he traversed those very peaks relentlessly."

He shared a poignant moment: "Standing atop the Sahyadri range in full costume, I felt minuscule. Dressed as this monumental figure, I glimpsed the vast landscape below and realized he owned that land. His vision to protect it and his people was awe-inspiring. In comparison, I am merely a tiny dot against his colossal achievements."

Collaborative Filmmaking Approach and Stellar Team

Reflecting on his directorial philosophy, Deshmukh highlighted a collaborative ethos. "My experiences with various filmmakers have shaped me—some were rigidly specific, while others welcomed input. I align with the latter, embracing suggestions from all quarters. This isn't due to uncertainty; I have a clear vision but constantly seek improvement."

He stressed the importance of assembling a superior team. "Surrounding oneself with exceptional talent elevates the project. That's how we secured legendary cinematographer Santosh Sivan. Genelia had previously collaborated with him, and he expressed interest back in 2015. During our recent writing phase, he serendipitously reached out, eager to shoot the film. His expertise in cinematography and art direction brings magical quality."

"Additionally, we enlisted renowned composers Ajay-Atul Gogavale, aiming to propel the film to unprecedented heights. The strategy is straightforward: collaborate with those who excel beyond you to enhance the final work."
