Sai Tamhankar on Typecasting: Success Leads to Similar Role Offers in Bollywood
Sai Tamhankar: Typecasting in Bollywood Stems from Success

Sai Tamhankar Opens Up About Typecasting Challenges in Bollywood

Actress Sai Tamhankar, currently starring in the series 'Matka King', has candidly addressed the persistent issue of typecasting within the Hindi film industry. She explained that while this phenomenon remains a significant hurdle for actors, it frequently originates from success itself, where acclaimed performances lead to a flood of offers for comparable roles.

The Double-Edged Sword of Success

Tamhankar, known for her versatile work in projects like 'Love Sonia', 'Bhakshak', 'Agni', 'Ground Zero', 'Navarasa', and 'Dabba Cartel', emphasized that rejecting work to prevent being confined to a specific image is among the most demanding aspects of an actor's career. In an interview with IANS, she remarked, "Yes, there's a stark silver lining of typecast."

She elaborated, "The thing is, once you do something which is a hit or admired by people, your character is a hit, admired by people, probably the people who cast you again or ask you again for the same thing or same kind of thing, they are probably playing it safe and rightfully so." This tendency, she noted, stems from filmmakers' desire to minimize risk by capitalizing on proven formulas.

The Tough Decision to Decline Roles

However, Tamhankar highlighted the personal struggle actors face in this scenario. "The only way to escape or to avoid being typecast is saying no to similar work. And that is the toughest part of an actor's job. Especially for me, it's very tough for me to say no to work," said the actress, who made her screen debut in 2003 with a minor role in 'Tuzyavina'.

She added, "But yes, I have done this in the past. I am slightly more seasoned when it comes to handling or fearing being typecast. But yeah, the layer still exists and I feel sad it should not exist. But a lot of things are changing. I think this too shall change. Let's be optimistic here." Her reflections underscore the ongoing battle between career opportunities and artistic growth in the industry.

Latest Project: 'Matka King'

Turning to her current endeavor, Tamhankar discussed 'Matka King', a series that also features Vijay Varma and Kritika Kamra. The show delves into 1960s Mumbai, portraying the story of an enterprising cotton trader who, seeking legitimacy and respect, initiates a new gambling game known as 'Matka'. This period drama showcases her continued commitment to diverse roles beyond potential typecasting.

In summary, Sai Tamhankar's insights reveal the complex dynamics of typecasting in Bollywood, where success can paradoxically limit an actor's range. Her experience highlights the courage required to navigate this landscape while pursuing varied and challenging projects.
