Shaan's Emotional Tribute to Asha Bhosle: A Bond Beyond Music
The passing of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle on April 12 at the age of 92 has left an irreplaceable void in Indian music. As tributes continue to pour in from across the entertainment industry, singer Shaan has come forward with particularly heartfelt and personal memories of his decades-long connection with the iconic vocalist.
Late-Night Calls and Unexpected Conversations
For Shaan, his relationship with Asha Bhosle transcended professional admiration, blossoming into a bond characterized by personal warmth and spontaneous interactions. Having performed alongside her on numerous stages over many years, Shaan cherished their unexpected telephone conversations.
"I've had the privilege and good fortune of having many conversations with Asha ji on the phone," Shaan recalled. "Mostly I would never know how to reach out to her. So she would call... whenever she would call, we would get to speak."
One memory stands out vividly in his mind - a late-night call that arrived without warning. "It was quite late that night, around 11 or 11:30, and suddenly I see her name flashing on my phone," he said. True to her direct personality, Asha Bhosle skipped formal pleasantries and got straight to the point.
A Touching Memory from London 2004
During that memorable call, Asha Bhosle referenced a special moment from their 2004 London performance. "She said, 'Accha sun, Tera beta gaane laga hai main sunn rahi hoon. Log keh rahe hain ki theek thaak hi gaata hai woah. Yaad hai, humne jab show kiya tha tab tere god mein tha woah,'" Shaan recounted.
Shaan explained that she was referring to his older son Soham, who had been crying during that London show. "She said, 'Isko godi mein le le' and I held him up," Shaan remembered. "And that time she announced on stage, 'Yeh jo baccha dekh rahe ho aap, iske Dadaji, (my father) ke saath maine perform kiya tha. Aaj bete ke saath perform kar rahi hoon aur jab yeh baccha bada ho jayega, main iske saath bhi perform karoongi!'"
During their late-night conversation, Asha Bhosle reminded Shaan of this promise. "She said, 'Ab toh tera beta bada ho gaya hai, bula usko ghar pe, kuch gaana kartein hain uske saath!'" Shaan was absolutely stunned by her recollection and invitation.
A Missed Opportunity and Lasting Regret
Despite the emotional significance of that invitation, Shaan admits he never followed through. "I didn't know how to really go about doing that," he confessed. "Whenever she would call, we would speak... but I rarely reached out to her. I guess it's my personality that I never reached out to her."
That hesitation now lingers as a quiet regret. "And now, I guess I never will," he said with palpable emotion.
When Shaan shared Asha Bhosle's invitation with his son Mahi, the young man was absolutely elated and immediately sought her blessings, cherishing the connection to the musical legend.
Her Blessings as Greatest Achievement
Beyond these personal memories, Shaan emphasized the profound influence Asha Bhosle had on his life and career. "I have always mentioned this - Asha ji's aashirwaad and fondness for my voice will remain my greatest take back from my singing career," he stated emphatically. "No other achievement or compliment can match up."
He described her as a towering inspiration who motivated him to work diligently and focus on what he could control in his artistic journey.
An Unmatched Musical Legacy
As the music industry reflects on Asha Bhosle's unparalleled contributions, Shaan echoed sentiments shared by countless artists and fans. "Her body of work is unparalleled... she has set the bar so high that it's impossible for anyone to match up," he declared.
Yet, even in her physical absence, her influence remains indelible. "She will continue to inspire and give us hope that if we work hard, there is no limit to what we can achieve," Shaan affirmed, capturing the enduring spirit of Asha Bhosle's remarkable legacy.
The singer's passing marks the end of an era, but through memories like Shaan's and her vast musical catalog, Asha Bhosle's voice and spirit will continue to resonate across generations of music lovers and artists alike.
