Shefali Shah Advocates for Root-Level Change in Women's Safety and Leadership
In a powerful address at the UP Transformation Dialogues in Lucknow, acclaimed actor Shefali Shah voiced deep concern over women's safety, asserting that true security stems from awareness and must begin at home. Speaking on the theme 'Gender equality and social inclusion: From safety to leadership', Shah delivered a compelling call for societal transformation.
Safety as a Baseline, Not the End Goal
"The problem must be addressed at its root," Shah declared, emphasizing a fundamental shift in approach. "So, if we want girls to be safe, we should raise our boys right." This statement underscores her belief that prevention through proper upbringing is crucial.
When questioned on transitioning from mere protection to genuine dignity for women, Shah articulated a visionary perspective. "Safety should be seen as a baseline, not the end goal," she explained. Women must attain authority and actively participate in decision-making processes to shape policies and strategies that authentically reflect their needs.
Beyond Token Celebrations to Basic Respect
Shah stressed that women deserve "a place at the same table" consistently, not just during symbolic occasions. "It's not about celebrating her for a day, like Women's Day or Valentine's Day. It's not about giving a medal or flowers to women, but it's about basic respect that should be given throughout," she remarked, highlighting the need for enduring respect over temporary gestures.
Economic Empowerment and Grassroots Strength
The actor also shed light on the critical role of women at the grassroots level, particularly in sectors like hospitality, food, and crafts. Many operate from their homes without access to adequate resources to scale their work, limiting their potential.
Citing the inspirational example of Lizzat Papad, started by seven women, Shah illustrated the power of economic empowerment. "Empowering women economically requires providing them with the tools and platforms to become enterprising," she asserted. "Women are women's biggest strength," she added, celebrating female solidarity and resilience.
Storytelling and Inclusive Representation in Cinema
On the role of the Hindi film industry in empowering women, Shah identified storytelling as a potent platform for social change. "We have miles to go," she acknowledged, but noted progress: "Films are the strongest platform for storytelling; now the woman is not just the subject of a story, they are the storyteller."
She further emphasized the importance of inclusive representation, advocating for voices from the LGBTQ community, minority backgrounds, and different social classes. "We need to normalise this, and look at issues instead of communities," she concluded, calling for a focus on universal human concerns rather than divisive labels.
