Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana has been ruled out of the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament during his side's round of 16 victory over co-hosts the United States. The injury, confirmed by Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene on Tuesday, casts a shadow over the Red Devils' quarterfinal preparations.
Onana's Injury Confirmed After US Match
Onana was forced off the pitch in the 21st minute of Monday's match at Seattle Stadium after an awkward landing. Despite the setback, he was later seen celebrating with his teammates while using crutches following the 4-1 victory. Medical examinations the next day confirmed the severity of the injury.
"Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament," Hacene said in a statement as quoted by Reuters. "This is devastating news, both for him personally and for the team."
Belgium's World Cup Campaign Continues
Belgium secured a commanding 4-1 win over the United States, powered by a brace from Charles De Ketelaere and a late goal from Romelu Lukaku. The victory booked their place in the quarterfinals, where they are scheduled to face Spain on Friday.
The team's journey through the group stage was challenging: they opened with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, followed by a goalless draw with Iran, before thrashing New Zealand 5-1 in their final group match to advance to the round of 32. In the round of 32, they staged a comeback to beat Senegal 3-2 in a classic encounter.
Onana to Stay with Squad Despite Injury
The statement added that after consultation with his Premier League club Aston Villa, Onana will remain with the Belgium squad at least until the quarterfinal game against Spain. His absence leaves a significant gap in midfield as Belgium aims to progress further in the tournament.
