Shivarajkumar, the celebrated son of Kannada cinema legend Dr Rajkumar, has established an illustrious career spanning over thirty years in the film industry. Now, the veteran actor is boldly expanding his creative boundaries through a series of ambitious pan-India ventures. His most prominent project marks his debut as a lead actor in Tollywood, portraying the revered Telangana leader Gummadi Narsaiah in an upcoming biographical film.
Hyderabad Memories: An Unforgettable Encounter with Law Enforcement
The Sandalwood icon holds numerous cherished memories from filming in Hyderabad, but one humorous incident remains particularly vivid. "During the shooting of 'Mutthanna' in 1994, I was dressed in a prison uniform for a scene where my character escapes from jail," Shivarajkumar recalls. "We were filming near Ramakrishna Theatre when an actual police officer apprehended me, genuinely believing I was an escaped prisoner. The production team had to swiftly intervene and clarify the situation. It was an unexpectedly amusing moment that I still smile about today."
Portraying a People's Leader: The Essence of Gummadi Narsaiah
Reflecting on his preparation for the biopic, Shivarajkumar expresses deep admiration for his subject. "When the director first narrated the script, I was struck by its authenticity and emotional resonance," he reveals. "Gummadi Narsaiah transcends conventional political labels; he is genuinely a man of the people. His remarkable sincerity continues to amaze me. Even now, he travels by bus and maintains an extraordinarily simple lifestyle. Portraying such an individual is both an honor and a profound responsibility."
The film officially commenced with a traditional puja ceremony in December, with principal photography scheduled to begin in February. "Most filming will occur in his native village, with additional schedules planned for Hyderabad and Karnataka," Shivarajkumar explains. "I will be dubbing my own dialogue in Telugu, and I also intend to provide voiceovers in Hindi and Tamil. While I'm comfortable with those languages, Malayalam presents more of a challenge, but I'm committed to giving it my absolute best effort."
His dedication to authenticity is evident in his meticulous preparation. "I have extensively studied video recordings to capture Gummadi Narsaiah's unique essence and mannerisms," the actor shares. "When he viewed the teaser, he appeared genuinely pleased. My objective is to preserve the integrity of his character without compromise, approaching this role with both confidence and heartfelt sincerity."
Gummadi Narsaiah: The People's Politician
Gummadi Narsaiah is a venerated veteran politician from Telangana and a prominent leader within the CPI (ML) New Democracy. Widely celebrated as "Prajala Manishi" (People's Man), he served five consecutive terms as the MLA for Yellandu constituency between 1983 and 2009. Renowned for his exceptional simplicity and unwavering integrity, he famously traveled by bicycle, resided in a modest home, and regularly donated his entire legislative salary to his political party. Having witnessed cinema's transformation since my father's era, I consistently encourage fans to explore content beyond linguistic confines. Consider my recent release '45' or upcoming projects like 'Gummadi Narsaiah,' 'Peddi,' and 'Jailer 2'—all are designed as pan-India releases."
Father's Legacy: Why He Won't Portray Dr Rajkumar
Despite the growing trend of biographical films, Shivarajkumar firmly rejects the possibility of portraying his legendary father, Dr Rajkumar, on screen. "Creating a biopic about Appaji would be exceptionally challenging," he states unequivocally. "No one can truly 'become' Rajkumar. If such a film were ever produced, it would undoubtedly be historic, but it should absolutely feature another actor in that role, not me. He gave me life; I will forever revere him, but I genuinely believe I am not the appropriate person to portray him cinematically."
Triumph Over Adversity: Cancer Recovery and Professional Resilience
Demonstrating remarkable fortitude, Shivarajkumar confronted bladder cancer with tremendous resilience, undergoing major surgery in December 2024. Reflecting on this profoundly challenging period, he shares, "That experience taught me invaluable lessons about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I was blessed with extraordinary support from family, friends, and medical professionals. Remarkably, even during chemotherapy treatments, I continued filming for '45.' Professional commitments must proceed regardless of circumstances; work serves as a vital anchor during recovery."

In Ram Charan's sports action drama 'Peddi,' Shivarajkumar embodies Gour Naidu, a character described as both majestic and explosive. "This is a particularly special role with a clearly defined narrative arc, from introduction to emotional climax," he elaborates. "My character functions as a support system for the protagonist, and the bond between us adds substantial depth to the story. Collaborating with Ram Charan has been thoroughly enjoyable; he embodies the same culture and humility as his father, Chiranjeevi garu."
Following his widely praised cameo as Narasimha in 'Jailer,' Shivarajkumar is set to reprise the role in the eagerly anticipated sequel.
