Sholay's 50th Anniversary: Final Cut with Original Ending Hits Theatres Dec 12, 2025
Sholay: The Final Cut 4K Release for 50th Anniversary

One of Indian cinema's most legendary films is set for a monumental return. The uncut and meticulously remastered 4K version, titled 'Sholay: The Final Cut,' is scheduled to reclaim the big screen on December 12, 2025. This global release marks the iconic movie's golden jubilee, offering audiences the complete story as originally envisioned by its creators.

A Story Finally Told: The Original Ending Restored

This definitive version carries the evocative tagline 'The Greatest Story Never Told,' a nod to the cinematic history altered by censorship. For decades, fans have known a version where the dreaded dacoit Gabbar Singh is arrested by the police. However, the original narrative penned by Salim-Javed had a different, more visceral conclusion.

The Final Cut will showcase the original ending, where Thakur Baldev Singh exacts his final revenge on Gabbar. This pivotal change was mandated by India's Central Board of Film Certification in 1975 during the Emergency period. The recent trailer, featuring restored video and audio, has already teased this dramatic alteration, building immense anticipation.

"This version contains the film’s original ending as well as the original soundtrack composed by R.D. Burman. I can’t wait for audiences to experience it on the big screen for the first time," said Shezaad Sippy, according to Variety. The release follows a three-year restoration collaboration and a premiere at Italy's Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in June.

Reliving a Cinematic Masterpiece

Directed by Ramesh Sippy, 'Sholay' is the quintessential Indian action-adventure film. It follows the unforgettable duo of Jai and Veeru, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, who are hired by a retired police officer, Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), to capture the merciless bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan).

The film's magnetic ensemble cast, including Hema Malini as the lively Basanti, Jaya Bachchan, and memorable performances by Asrani and Mac Mohan, created magic. The upcoming re-release is bittersweet, arriving after the poignant loss of several key cast members, including Dharmendra and Asrani.

With its brilliant dialogues, iconic soundtrack, and never-before-seen brilliance, 'Sholay' defined a generation of filmmaking. 'The Final Cut' is not just a re-release; it is a cultural event, inviting both nostalgic fans and new viewers to witness the definitive chapter of this timeless classic in stunning 4K clarity.
