Actress Shweta Tripathi, widely recognized for her performance in Mirzapur, is embracing a significant career evolution by stepping into production and leading role for a new horror film titled Nava. This project marks her inaugural venture into the horror genre while simultaneously expanding her responsibilities behind the camera.
A Culturally Rooted Horror Tale
The film is set against the haunting and mystical backdrop of the Sundarbans wetlands, a location ripe with atmospheric potential. According to reports from Variety, the narrative follows a character named Tara Sen, who returns to her ancestral home only to become entangled in a mystery that has persisted for generations. This enigma involves river gods and deeply buried family secrets that refuse to stay hidden.
The screenplay for Nava is penned by Akash Mohimen, and the vision is to create a horror drama that is firmly planted in its cultural context—drawing from the soil and folklore of Bengal—while possessing themes universal enough to resonate with a global viewership. Tripathi herself described the film as a story that explores the complexities of confronting one's ancestral past, weaving together universal themes of haunting and healing.
An International Collaboration
Directing this eerie tale is Anshul Chauhan, a filmmaker based in Tokyo. This project holds special significance as it represents the expansion of his production banner, Kowatanda Films, into the Indian market. Nava stands as the company's first local collaboration within India, signaling a growing trend of cross-border cinematic partnerships.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the project, Shweta Tripathi shared her excitement about partnering with Kowatanda Films. She stated that their collective aim is to create compelling cinema that transcends geographical boundaries and connects with audiences worldwide. She is eager to help bring what she calls an "atmospheric, unforgettable world" to life for viewers everywhere.
Tripathi's Growing Production Portfolio
Nava will be produced under Bandarful Films, Shweta Tripathi's own newly launched production banner. This is not her first foray into production, solidifying her role as a content creator beyond acting.
Her second production venture is already in the pipeline: a queer drama named Mujhe Jaan Na Kaho Meri Jaan. This film will feature Tilottama Shome and is set to be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sanjoy Nag. Tripathi will also star in this project alongside Shome, with production scheduled to commence by the end of 2025.
