Spanish Adaptation of Hit Indian Thriller 'Drishyam' Set for Production in June 2024
In a significant development for international cinema, the Spanish remake of the acclaimed Indian thriller 'Drishyam' is officially scheduled to commence filming in June 2024. This announcement marks a major milestone nearly two years after global remake rights were secured, highlighting the film's enduring cross-cultural appeal.
Global Remake Rights Acquisition and Initial Plans
Back in February 2024, producers Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak made headlines by acquiring worldwide remake rights for 'Drishyam 1' and 'Drishyam 2' from Aashirvad Cinemas, the original production banner. At that time, projects for American and Korean adaptations were already in active development, while negotiations for the Spanish version were reaching their conclusive phases.
Official Production Announcement at Delhi Film Festival
According to a recent Bombay Times report, producer Rodrigo Espinel confirmed the filming timeline during the ongoing International Film Festival of Delhi. Espinel revealed that the Spanish adaptation will feature a top-tier Spanish cast and be helmed by a Spanish director, with shooting set to begin in June.
"It's an interesting story because my partner is a Mexican producer who purchased the intellectual property rights, and he contacted us due to Spain's excellent tax incentives," Espinel explained. "The concept can be adapted perfectly to Spanish culture. We have now commenced work and will start shooting next June."
Universal Story Elements Driving Global Adaptation
When questioned about the film's potential resonance with Spanish audiences, Espinel emphasized the universal themes at its core. "Ultimately, it's the story of a father protecting his daughter and a mother searching for her son, which makes adaptation straightforward," he noted. "As a producer, adapting highly localized films can be challenging, often losing the original soul. In this case, despite being very Indian, it connects easily with our audience."
Background of the 'Drishyam' Franchise
The Hindi remake 'Drishyam', released in 2015, was an official adaptation of the 2013 Malayalam film starring Mohanlal. Directed by Nishikant Kamat, it featured Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, and Ishita Dutta in pivotal roles. The plot revolves around an uneducated father who takes extreme measures to shield his family after they accidentally kill a sexual predator, whose mother is a powerful police officer, creating intense dramatic tension.
Continuing Success with Sequels and New Installments
The franchise's success continued with 'Drishyam 2' in 2022, which became an unexpected blockbuster under Abhishek Pathak's direction, featuring Akshaye Khanna in a key role. The third installment, 'Drishyam 3', is slated for release on October 2, 2024, with Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj joining the cast, though Akshaye Khanna will not return.
Simultaneously, the original Malayalam series progresses, with 'Drishyam 2' released in 2021 and the third chapter scheduled for May 21, 2024. This expansion underscores the franchise's robust growth across multiple languages and markets, solidifying its status as a global cinematic phenomenon.
