Three consecutive live performances by Punjabi singer and actress Sunanda Sharma in Uttar Pradesh have sparked significant controversy, with incidents at private universities in Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Bareilly capturing widespread public and media attention. These events, part of her promotional tour, were marred by unexpected disruptions that led to police involvement and raised concerns about event security.
Ghaziabad Stage Invasion Leaves Singer Frightened
The first incident unfolded at the Raj Kumar Goel Institute of Technology in Ghaziabad, where a fan abruptly leaped onto the stage during Sharma's performance. In a startling moment, the individual touched the singer's feet, causing her to become visibly frightened. She screamed and abruptly walked off the stage mid-performance, halting the show. Police promptly detained the man, who was reportedly a student at the same institute. Videos of this unsettling event circulated widely across social media platforms, amplifying the incident's visibility.
Later, Sharma addressed the situation in a video shared on her social media accounts. She expressed that the incident at RKGIT Ghaziabad had scared everyone, including herself, due to her loud reaction. However, she conveyed a message of forgiveness, stating that she believed the student's intention was not malicious but rather an expression of love done incorrectly. She publicly forgave him and requested the university management to do the same, highlighting her compassionate response to the disruption.
Meerut Performance Halted by Student Clashes
A day later, further unrest erupted during Sharma's show at Subharti University in Meerut, which was part of the annual festival "Spark-2026." According to police reports, chaos broke out among students near the stage, primarily over issues related to seating arrangements and proximity to the performer. The argument quickly escalated into physical clashes, resulting in several students sustaining injuries and having their clothes torn. The incident forced a temporary halt to the performance as panic spread through the crowd.
SP Rural Abhijeet Kumar confirmed that the Jani police had taken cognisance of the matter and initiated a thorough investigation to determine the causes and identify those responsible. This second disruption underscored ongoing challenges in managing large student gatherings at such events.
Bareilly Crowd Control Requires Police Intervention
On Sunday night, a third incident occurred at Future University in Bareilly during the "Future Fest." A massive crowd of over 10,000 students gathered for Sharma's performance, but the situation turned chaotic when fans attempted to breach barricades to get closer to the stage. Police intervened swiftly, using mild force to control the crowd and prevent further escalation. A police personnel, speaking on condition of anonymity, clarified that minimal force was employed solely to manage the situation and ensure public safety, emphasizing the proactive measures taken to restore order.
These consecutive incidents have raised questions about event management and security protocols at university festivals in Uttar Pradesh. Authorities are reviewing procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, while Sunanda Sharma's tour continues to draw attention for both her performances and the unexpected controversies surrounding them.
