Howrah: A gold jewellery shop owner was robbed of his bag containing gold and silver ornaments worth several lakh rupees on Saturday night at Ranihati Puratan bazaar in Howrah. A youth and a jewellery trader have been detained for questioning, said police.
The bag, according to the complaint, had 7 kg to 8 kg of silver ornaments, 100 to 150 grams of gold jewellery and Rs 60,000 in cash.
Terrified by the incident and grief-stricken over the loss, the victim, a gold merchant named Chandan Kanrar, suffered a heart attack. He has been admitted to a private hospital. Police stated that he narrowly escaped with his life as the bullets missed the target.
It is alleged that the criminals fled with the jewellery and cash. The incident has sparked widespread panic in the area. Investigators are currently examining the CCTV footage of the robbery that took place when the victim was heading home at night.
It has been alleged that at that time, a total of six miscreants arriving on three motorcycles launched an attack. The miscreants reportedly fired five rounds indiscriminately. While most of the bullets didn’t strike the victim, one could hit the oil tank of the motorcycle that he was riding.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police immediately initiated an investigation. “We have alerted all the nearby police stations. No one has been arrested yet,” police said.
