Tejaswini Kolhapure Speaks Candidly About Bollywood Family Pressures
Actress Tejaswini Kolhapure has publicly addressed the unique challenges and intense pressures that come from belonging to a renowned film family. In a recent interview, she opened up about the constant comparisons to her elder sister, veteran actor Padmini Kolhapure, and how this scrutiny has shaped her career in the entertainment industry.
The Double-Edged Sword of Film Family Legacy
Speaking about the expectations tied to her background, Tejaswini acknowledged that while family visibility can open doors, it simultaneously brings immense and often unfair scrutiny. "People are naturally curious to see what someone from a film family is doing. The media also plays a role in building up these narratives. So yes, it does open doors, but there is a tremendous amount of hard work involved behind the scenes," she explained to the Free Press Journal.
She further elaborated that actors from film families frequently feel compelled to prove themselves repeatedly, facing heightened expectations. "Ultimately, someone who comes from a film family has to prove themselves a hundred times more than someone who is just entering the industry. The kind of pressure one endures is absolutely crazy," Tejaswini stated, highlighting the disproportionate burden placed on industry insiders.
Painful Audition Experiences and Unfair Comparisons
Recalling some of her early career auditions, Tejaswini shared deeply disheartening experiences where casting teams explicitly asked her to imitate her sister's acting style. "When I attended certain auditions, it was so disheartening because many people said, 'Okay, act like Padmini.' I am my own person—how can I possibly act like her?" she revealed.
These comparisons left her questioning the very basis of such judgments. "A few auditions went exactly like this, and I felt utterly dejected. Why are you comparing me with my sister in the first place?" she expressed, underscoring the frustration of being evaluated against a family member rather than on her own merits.
Tejaswini also reflected on how much more difficult it must be for siblings closer in age to handle such comparisons. "Thankfully, she is much older than me. Imagine if siblings have just a two- or three-year age gap—what they must endure. It is so profoundly unfair," she added, showing empathy for others in similar situations.
Emotional Toll and Moments of Self-Doubt
The actress confessed that the relentless comparisons significantly impacted her confidence, leading to periods of self-doubt and reconsideration of her acting journey. "So many times I felt like giving up entirely. That's why sometimes you see me and sometimes you don't—I retreat into my little shell, wondering whether I should continue moving forward or not," she admitted.
Describing the emotional vulnerability inherent in the profession, Tejaswini noted, "Actors are very sensitive people by nature." However, she emphasized that over time, through personal growth and realizations, she has learned not to let these comparisons define her. "Over the years, with a lot of self-growth and introspection, I've understood that it shouldn't matter. Nobody should pay attention to such comparisons. I only wish someone had told me this valuable lesson earlier in my career," she concluded, offering wisdom for aspiring actors facing similar challenges.
