The Congress party has endorsed the use of the State Election Commission's (SEC) voter list for the upcoming Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections. The electoral rolls finalized by the SEC include 88.95 lakh voters in the state capital, according to a party statement released on Thursday.
Party's Stance on Voter List
Senior Congress leaders, including state president D.K. Shivakumar, expressed confidence in the SEC's list, stating it ensures a fair and transparent electoral process. "The SEC's voter list is comprehensive and accurate, reflecting the true electorate of Bengaluru," Shivakumar said. The party urged all stakeholders to accept the list to avoid delays in the GBA polls.
Background of GBA Elections
The GBA elections are crucial for urban governance in Bengaluru, as the body oversees infrastructure and development projects. The polls were originally scheduled for earlier this year but were postponed due to disputes over voter lists. The Congress move is seen as an effort to expedite the electoral process.
Reactions from Other Parties
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the SEC's list, alleging discrepancies. However, Congress maintains that the list has been prepared after due diligence. "We have full faith in the SEC's work," added Shivakumar. The final decision on the voter list rests with the state government and the election commission.
