Tom Holland Thought Nolan Didn't Like His 'Odyssey' Performance Over IMAX Cuts
Tom Holland Thought Nolan Didn't Like His 'Odyssey' Performance

Tom Holland, the 'Spider-Man' star, initially believed that Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan was unhappy with his performance on the set of 'The Odyssey'. The actor later learned that the frequent cuts were due to the limitations of IMAX camera technology, not dissatisfaction with his acting.

Holland's First IMAX Experience

In an interview with Fandango, Holland explained that he was working with IMAX cameras for the first time. He did not understand why Nolan would cut his shot every three minutes. 'I thought I was totally s******g the bed during his first day on set with the director, who had to cut every three minutes due to the IMAX technology,' Holland said. 'Working with the IMAX cameras for the first time is an experience. It is unlike anything I have ever seen before, and I didn't know that it only ran for three minutes.'

Holland recalled a moment with co-star Jon Bernthal, wondering, 'Why does he keep cutting? Why does he keep doing that?' He added, 'And in my head, I was like, Does he not like what we're doing? What is happening?' The confusion was resolved by stunt coordinator George Cottle, who informed Holland, 'No, no, no, no, no, there's only three minutes in the mag.'

About 'The Odyssey'

'The Odyssey' is directed by Christopher Nolan and is set to release in theatres on July 17, 2026. The film features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron. The story follows Greek King Odysseus (Damon) on a perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War, beset by vengeful gods, sea monsters, and enchantresses. He fights to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Holland).

The film is produced under Syncopy Inc and distributed by Universal Pictures.

IMAX Technology Challenges

Holland's experience highlights the unique challenges of shooting with IMAX cameras, which use large-format film reels that typically run for only about three minutes. This requires frequent reloading and re-cutting, which can be misinterpreted by actors unfamiliar with the technology. The actor's initial assumption that Nolan's frequent cuts indicated dissatisfaction underscores the importance of communication on set.

Despite the initial confusion, Holland expressed admiration for Nolan's filmmaking process. The film is highly anticipated as Nolan's first mythological epic, blending his signature nonlinear storytelling with large-scale visual effects.
