In a sharp critique of the newly formed Tamil Nadu government led by Vijay, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan has expressed deep shock over the protocol followed during the Chief Minister's swearing-in ceremony. The event, which took place on May 11, 2026, saw the national song 'Vande Mataram' being played before the state song 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu', a departure from the long-standing convention in Tamil Nadu where official events begin with the state song and conclude with the national anthem.
Breaking the Convention
Thirumavalavan questioned the rationale behind this change, asking whether it was made to appease Governor Rajendra Arlekar. He demanded a clear clarification from Chief Minister Vijay on why the usual order was altered. The VCK leader emphasized that this deviation has caused unease among allied parties that support the government on secular grounds, as Vande Mataram carries religious connotations that some find objectionable.
Political Motives Alleged
Beyond the ceremonial protocol, Thirumavalavan also criticized Vijay's recent remarks on the state's debt. He accused the Chief Minister of selectively presenting figures without providing the necessary economic context, calling such statements misleading and politically motivated. The VCK chief warned that such actions could undermine the secular and inclusive image of the coalition government.
The controversy has sparked a broader debate about the role of national symbols in state functions and the need to respect regional sentiments. As the new government settles in, the issue may test the cohesion of the ruling alliance and its commitment to Tamil Nadu's unique cultural identity.
