Ram Gopal Varma Breaks Silence on Sridevi Memoir Controversy and Boney Kapoor Fallout

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has consistently expressed his profound admiration for the legendary actress Sridevi throughout his career. However, his candid and unfiltered reflections in his autobiography, Guns and Thighs: The Story of My Life, sparked significant controversy, primarily due to the language he employed to describe his fascination with her unparalleled beauty and immense talent.

Addressing the Reported Fallout with Boney Kapoor

At the time of the book's release, media reports suggested that Sridevi's husband, producer Boney Kapoor, had strongly criticized Varma, labeling him with harsh terms in response to the memoir's content. In a recent and revealing conversation, Varma directly addressed this reported fallout and clarified the current state of their relationship.

When questioned about whether he had met Boney Kapoor after the controversy erupted and how Kapoor reacted to the book, Varma provided a straightforward response. "Yes, I met him. I keep meeting him even now. I spoke to him just a month back," he stated, indicating ongoing communication.

Further probed on whether Boney Kapoor had confronted him about the memoir's passages, Varma dismissed the notion. "No nothing, they all know me from some 30 years," he explained, emphasizing their long-standing acquaintance.

Dismissing Lingering Tension as Misunderstandings

Varma firmly maintained that there is no residual animosity between them. He suggested that misunderstandings and conflicts often arise not from direct interactions but from third-party interpretations and provocations.

"Most of the time when suppose someone is not available and they are asked, 'You know what Ramu said?' That will sometimes kind of provoke them to say 'what is wrong with him' and all that. But after that in a phone call, it will get sorted out," Varma elaborated, highlighting how gossip can distort perceptions.

When directly asked if matters were eventually resolved between them, he simply affirmed, "Yes."

Clarifying Remarks About Sridevi's Daughters

The conversation also touched upon previous remarks attributed to Varma regarding Sridevi's daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. He was asked about a suggestion that he would not work with Janhvi Kapoor because she does not remind him of her mother.

Varma categorically denied making such a comparison. "I didn't say that. I mean, I have no project with her. That's all. I never compared her to Sridevi," he clarified. When further questioned if Khushi Kapoor reminds him of the iconic actress, he responded with a definitive "no."

Revisiting the Memoir's Tributes to Sridevi

In his memoir, Varma dedicated significant passages to Sridevi, with whom he collaborated on acclaimed films like Kshana Kshanam and Govinda Govinda. His writing portrayed her in glowing, almost divine terms.

He described her as "one of the sexiest and most beautiful women God ever created," adding, "I think he creates such exquisite pieces of art only once in a million years." Reflecting on their work together, he called Kshana Kshanam "my love letter to her."

Varma recalled a memorable incident during the film's climax shoot in Nandyal. "The whole town came to a standstill. Banks, government offices, schools, colleges, everything in town stopped functioning as everyone wanted to see Sridevi," he wrote, illustrating her massive stardom.

However, a more controversial passage expressed his personal dismay at seeing Sridevi in a domestic setting after her marriage. He wrote about her transition from being "the object of lust of the entire nation's male population" to a life where he "saw her in Boney's house serving tea like an ordinary housewife." Varma admitted, "I hated Boney Kapoor for bringing that angel down from heaven to such an ordinary, humdrum existence," a sentiment that undoubtedly fueled the subsequent controversy and reported reactions from the Kapoor family.
