Vidya Balan Opens Up About Emotional Decision to Join 'Raja Shivaji'

In a heartfelt revelation, acclaimed actress Vidya Balan has shared that her involvement in the upcoming Marathi film 'Raja Shivaji' is deeply personal, stemming from a profound sense of pride and excitement. Speaking at the trailer launch event, Balan emphasized how this project resonates with her roots and cultural identity, making it a significant milestone in her career.

A Cultural Moment Rooted in Mumbai Upbringing

Balan, who was born and raised in Mumbai, described the film as a major cultural moment for her. She expressed that being part of a Marathi production of this scale, especially one based on the life of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, fills her with immense honor. The actress highlighted how her connection to the city and its heritage fueled her enthusiasm from the very beginning.

The Journey from Curiosity to Commitment

Balan recalled first hearing about the film when she learned that a Marathi project on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was in development, with Riteish Deshmukh at the helm. Initially, she felt a mix of curiosity and concern, wondering why she hadn't been approached despite other actors like Sanju and Abhishek being attached. "I was thinking that Sanju is doing it, Abhishek is doing it. Why didn't Ritesh come to me?" she said, admitting fears that there might not be a role for her or that Deshmukh didn't favor her as an actor.

When Deshmukh finally visited her with the script, Balan had already decided to accept the offer but deliberately held back her excitement. "I had decided that I would do it. But he came and told me the story. And I was listening very carefully. I told him that I will think about it and tell you. Because I didn't want to express too much excitement," she explained. Once he left, she immediately called him to confirm her participation, wanting to maintain a composed demeanor.

Pride and Excitement for the Project

Balan closed her remarks by reiterating the film's importance to her, stating, "This is a matter of great pride for me. And I am very very excited. And what a treat!" She underscored that participating in a Marathi film of this magnitude, centered on such a pivotal historical figure, is a dream come true that aligns with her personal and professional values.
