Choreographer Vijay Ganguly Explains Intentional Omission of Dance Numbers in Dhurandhar Sequel

Despite the massive success of the high-energy track 'Shararat' in the first installment, 'Dhurandhar', fans have noticed a distinct lack of celebratory dance numbers in the record-breaking sequel, 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge'. Addressing the buzz, ace choreographer Vijay Ganguly revealed in a recent interview that the decision was entirely intentional and planned from the outset.

No Space for Celebration in a Tense Revenge Thriller

In an interview with India Today, Vijay Ganguly opened up about not having a song like 'Shararat' in 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge'. He explained that the film was initially conceived as one complete story, with all songs intended for the first half, while the second half focused solely on revenge. Ganguly emphasized that there is "no space" for a celebratory song in the sequel, as the narrative maintains constant tension from start to finish.

He further elaborated that adding a random song would have disrupted the flow of the story. "If a song is not organically part of the script and is added just for promotion, it rarely works," Ganguly noted, highlighting the importance of narrative integrity over commercial gimmicks.

Why 'Shararat' Succeeded in the First Film

Ganguly also reflected on why 'Shararat' became a highlight of the original movie. He attributed its success to being seamlessly embedded within the story, rather than feeling like a forced interruption. "It worked because it was embedded in the story. It did not feel like the narrative paused for a song. A lot was happening within it, and it moved the story forward. That is why it connected," he said.

In contrast, for 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', the choreographer pointed out that there simply was not that scope, given the film's relentless pace and thematic focus on vengeance. He expressed relief that they did not forcibly add a song, as "people would have questioned it", potentially undermining the film's credibility.

Box Office Success and Film Details

Directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' has achieved remarkable commercial success, earning over Rs 620 crore at the box office since its release on March 19, 2026. The film's performance underscores that a lack of dance numbers has not hindered its appeal, instead allowing the thriller elements to shine through.

Ganguly's insights shed light on the thoughtful creative decisions behind blockbuster filmmaking, where story coherence often takes precedence over traditional Bollywood song-and-dance routines.
