Jana Nayagan's journey to screens has faced unprecedented certification hurdles. Producers KVN Productions LLP submitted the film to CBFC on December 24, expecting routine clearance. The examining committee recommended U/A 16+ certification after requesting 27 changes, which the makers promptly implemented.
However, complications emerged when a dissenting committee member filed a complaint with the CBFC chairman. This member claimed his objections weren't properly recorded during the examination process. On January 5, the chairman referred Jana Nayagan to a revising committee, effectively halting the certification process.
Legal Proceedings Create Release Uncertainty
The producers responded with legal action, filing a writ petition against CBFC's certification delay. Justice PT Asha of the Madras High Court initially heard arguments from both sides. She announced her decision would come on the film's scheduled release day, causing the first postponement from the planned January 9 premiere.
Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan represented CBFC during proceedings. He explained the certification process reopened because of the committee member's complaint. Sundaresan argued the chairman acted within rights by sending the film to a revising committee.

Justice Asha's ruling favored the producers, directing CBFC to grant certification immediately. She declared the revising committee decision "without jurisdiction" once certification was granted. The judge also noted the complainant's grievance appeared "an afterthought" after examining materials.
CBFC appealed this order, claiming insufficient time to file their response. A division bench then stayed the single judge's directive, putting the film's clearance on hold. The matter returns to the High Court on January 20 after Pongal holidays, while the Supreme Court considers the broader appeal today.
