Yogesh Deshpande's Hindi Film 'Thumbz Up' on Digital Divide

From Ad Films to Feature Cinema: Yogesh Deshpande's Journey

Yogesh Deshpande embarked on his professional journey in 2005 as an advertising filmmaker, quickly establishing himself as a master of visual storytelling and brand communication. Over the years, he has written and directed more than 100 advertisement films, building a formidable reputation in the industry. Based in Pune, he founded RedefineZ Productions after solidifying his position in the advertising world, eventually making a significant transition to feature films as both writer and director.

Marathi Cinema Foundations and Musical Biopic Achievement

Deshpande's entry into long-form storytelling came with his Marathi debut feature, 66 Sadashiv, which demonstrated his capability for extended narrative structures. He followed this success with an ambitious and culturally significant project: India's first-ever musical biopic, Swaragandharvaa Sudhir Phadke. This film highlighted his commitment to exploring Indian cultural heritage through cinematic means.

Philosophical Foundations: Rooted Emotions Meet Contemporary Cinema

At the heart of Yogesh Deshpande's cinematic approach lies a profound belief in rooted emotions, Indian cultural values, and traditional storytelling techniques, all skillfully blended with modern cinematic language. These core principles now form the foundation of his upcoming Hindi feature film, which is currently in the pre-production phase.

'Thumbz Up': A Cinematic Exploration of Digital Exclusion

The production house has officially announced the film's title as Thumbz Up, scheduled to begin filming in the coming months. This project represents Deshpande's debut in the Hindi and Bollywood film market as a director, positioning him as a filmmaker who brings regional depth and cultural authenticity into mainstream Hindi cinema.

Set against the breathtaking and cinematic landscapes of Konkan, the film explores a world shaped by the digital divide and its impact on human inhabitants. This narrative space remains largely unexplored in mainstream cinema. The story is driven by a strong female protagonist and promises an emotionally layered yet engaging cinematic experience. Casting is currently underway, and extensive location scouting has already been completed.

Real-Life Inspiration: Technology's Human Cost

Speaking about his Hindi film debut, Yogesh Deshpande revealed the powerful real-life incidents that inspired Thumbz Up. "My film is inspired by two real incidents that disturbed me deeply," he explained. "One was the tragic death of a young girl who was denied ration because of a small clerical error in digital records, showing how technology can decide who eats and who doesn't."

"The second was what I observed in remote villages, where people climb hills just to get a mobile signal to call an ambulance, receive ration OTPs, handle pension and bank transaction processing, or help children attend online classes. These moments revealed a harsh contrast between digital India and forgotten India."

"Together, they became the emotional trigger for me to develop a film on the digital divide, questioning systems that are meant to empower people but often ignore their human reality. Especially in the context of homemakers who are trying to create their own world and become self-sufficient in this digital world!"

A Career Spanning Multiple Storytelling Mediums

With a career that spans advertising, music-driven biopics, and socially rooted narratives, Yogesh Deshpande continues to evolve as a storyteller who believes that cinema must remain connected to its emotional and cultural soil, even as it reaches global audiences. Thumbz Up has been written, directed, and produced by Deshpande himself, marking a significant milestone in his cinematic journey.
