The cinematic universe of Pandora has returned to captivate Indian audiences. James Cameron's highly anticipated sequel, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' premiered across Indian theatres on December 19, 2025, and is poised for a spectacular financial launch. Early projections indicate the film is heading for an opening day collection exceeding a staggering ₹30 crore in the domestic market.
Projections and Early Numbers
The excitement for the third chapter in the Avatar saga was evident from its remarkable advance ticket sales. According to industry estimates tracked by Sacnilk, the film had already garnered approximately ₹0.21 crore in net collections from early morning shows across all language versions by 7:40 AM on its release day. This early momentum sets the stage for a bumper opening, potentially mirroring the success of its predecessor.
'Avatar: The Way of Water' (Avatar 2) had set a high benchmark in 2022, amassing nearly ₹50 crore on its first day in India and eventually earning around ₹500 crore during its entire theatrical run. While 'Fire and Ash' aims for a strong start, its ultimate performance will be closely watched against these figures.
Aiming for Global Box Office Dominance
The film's ambitions extend far beyond Indian shores. Its international rollout commenced on December 17, leading to a global opening weekend projection. Renowned film industry publication Variety predicts the movie could debut with an impressive $90 million to $105 million from approximately 3,800 theatres in the United States alone.
On a worldwide scale, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' is expected to open with a colossal sum between $340 million and $365 million. This would position it for one of the biggest global openings of the year. The franchise has a history of monumental debuts: the original 'Avatar' opened with $232 million worldwide in 2009, while 'The Way of Water' shattered records with a $441 million global opening in 2022.
The Race to the $2 Billion Club
The financial stakes for this instalment are historically significant. The first Avatar film remains the highest-grossing movie of all time with a lifetime global collection of $2.92 billion. Its sequel followed with a monumental $2.3 billion. If 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' manages to cross the $2 billion mark, it will achieve a unique cinematic milestone.
It would become the first film franchise in history to have three individual instalments each gross over $2 billion globally. Currently, only four films have reached this elite club: the first two Avatar movies, Marvel's 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019), and 'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018).
Produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Studios, the film features a runtime of 3 hours and 17 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating. It brings back familiar faces including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang, alongside new additions like Oona Chaplin. The story continues the saga of Jake and Neytiri's family as they navigate grief and encounter a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe known as the Ash People.
Meanwhile, in other release news, Paul Feig's 'The Housemaid' is scheduled for a US release on the same day but will arrive in Indian cinemas later, on January 2, 2026.
