Dhurandhar: The Revenge Defies Early Obstacles to Become Box Office Phenomenon
Aditya Dhar's cinematic spectacle 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' has not only captured the box office but has also ignited fervent discussions across the internet since its theatrical debut on March 19. Within a mere week, the film has shattered multiple industry records, maintaining an extraordinary performance trajectory that shows no signs of slowing down.
Unexpected Hurdles Before Release
Just one day prior to its highly anticipated premiere, the film encountered an unforeseen challenge when its paid reviews were abruptly cancelled due to reported 'technical issues.' This development created significant uncertainty and speculation among industry observers and potential viewers alike.
Actor Danish Pandor, who portrays the character Uzair Baloch in the film, recently shared poignant insights about the emotional rollercoaster of the opening day. He vividly recalled entering a sparsely populated theater with only 40-50 attendees, a stark contrast to what one might expect for such a major release, particularly amidst what he described as pervasive 'negative publicity' surrounding the project.
Danish Pandor's Emotional Reflection
In an exclusive interview with ABP Live, Pandor reflected on that challenging period: 'It's all about the audience. I remember the film released on Friday after the screening got cancelled on Thursday. I was completely heartbroken. I couldn't understand what was happening. I kept thinking, 'It is such a great film, why is this happening?' And on top of that, there was too much negative publicity around it.'
He further elaborated on the dramatic turnaround: 'When the film finally released on Friday, I went for the 2:30 pm show. There were barely 40-50 people in the theatre. I kept wondering, we have made such a beautiful film, and there are no viewers. From 8 pm onwards, reviews started pouring in. Suddenly people began watching it and talking about it on social media. It picked up so well that there was no looking back. The reality is, no matter how much negativity surrounds a film, when audiences decide to show their love, nobody can stop them.'
Record-Breaking Box Office Performance
Despite this uncertain beginning, 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' achieved monumental box office numbers from its very first day. The film collected an astonishing Rs 145 crore on opening day, including paid previews, establishing the biggest opening ever recorded for a Bollywood release. This initial momentum was sustained with two consecutive days exceeding Rs 100 crore each, culminating in a phenomenal first-week domestic total of Rs 643 crore.
KDM Controversy and Theatre Cancellations
Parallel to the film's success story emerged a significant controversy regarding cancelled shows. Gaiety-Galaxy theater owner Manoj Desai publicly criticized Jio Studios, the makers of 'Dhurandhar 2', for delayed delivery of KDM files. For those unfamiliar with the term, KDM stands for Key Delivery Message - an encrypted XML file containing the security key necessary to unlock and play encrypted Digital Cinema Packages (DCP).
KDMs function as a crucial Digital Rights Management (DRM) tool against piracy by restricting movies to specific, authorized theater servers within designated time windows. Without receiving the KDM from film producers, theaters are legally unauthorized to screen any film.
Desai expressed his frustration to ETimes: 'They were running late and they are not answerable to anyone. They have earned so much money from 'Dhurandhar' and yet they did not care about so many cancelled shows. 2 shows were cancelled at Gaeity and two shows at Galaxy and two shows at Maratha Mandir. So, total 6 shows were cancelled at my theatres. Mere akele theatre mein nahi. Pure India mein 500 theatres mein KDM nahi gaya aur show cancel hua.'
The controversy highlights the logistical challenges that can impact even the most successful film releases, with Desai claiming approximately 500 theaters across India experienced show cancellations due to KDM delivery issues.
Industry Impact and Future Implications
The remarkable journey of 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' demonstrates several important dynamics in contemporary Bollywood:
- The power of audience word-of-mouth to overcome initial negative publicity
- The critical importance of technical delivery systems in modern film distribution
- The evolving relationship between social media buzz and box office performance
- The resilience of quality content despite operational challenges
As the film continues its theatrical run, industry analysts are closely watching whether it can sustain this unprecedented momentum and potentially establish new benchmarks for Indian cinema. The combination of emotional storytelling, technical controversies, and record-breaking financial performance makes this one of the most compelling entertainment stories of the year.
