Dhurandhar Box Office Roars in Kashmir Despite 'Propaganda' Debate: Omar Abdullah
Dhurandhar's Kashmir Success Amid Propaganda Debate

Ranveer Singh's latest blockbuster, 'Dhurandhar', has ignited a fierce debate across the nation, with critics labelling it a propaganda vehicle. Yet, in a surprising twist, the film is reportedly witnessing phenomenal audience turnout in Jammu and Kashmir, even as the political discourse around its narrative intensifies.

Omar Abdullah Weighs In on 'Hypernationalistic' Cinema

Amid the swirling controversy, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, was recently asked for his perspective on what he termed "hypernationalistic" films, specifically naming 'The Kashmir Files' and 'Dhurandhar'. Speaking at an Express Adda event, Abdullah clarified that he has not watched either movie and does not plan to. However, he candidly acknowledged the contrasting box office fortunes of the two films in the Valley.

"I haven't seen either and truth be told, I don't intend to see either of them," Abdullah stated. He then pointed out a key difference: "The first movie ('The Kashmir Files') didn't do very well in the Valley, but the second one ('Dhurandhar')... seems to be doing roaring business."

Packed Theatres and Record-Breaking Numbers

Abdullah's observation was corroborated by a notable figure in the audience. "I spot Vijay Dhar saab in the audience. He has the only multiplex in the valley and he is nodding away saying that his box office is doing great with this second movie," the Chief Minister added, emphasizing that Kashmiri audiences are embracing the film for its entertainment value.

Reports from the ground confirm this trend. 'Dhurandhar' is running to full houses not only in Srinagar but also in smaller towns across the region, including Pulwama and Shopian. This robust performance is part of a massive global wave. The film has amassed a staggering ₹702 crore worldwide, with a hefty ₹460 crore coming from the Indian market alone. This cements its position as the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, only behind 'Chhaava'.

In comparison, the earlier controversial release 'The Kashmir Files', which faced significant criticism upon its 2022 debut, earned ₹252 crore during its entire theatrical run.

Sequel Already in the Pipeline

The overwhelming commercial success has paved the way for a follow-up. A sequel to 'Dhurandhar' is already in active development and is scheduled to hit cinemas within the next three months. The project was officially announced at the time of the first film's release. The ensemble cast, led by Ranveer Singh, includes prominent names like Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi.

The narrative around 'Dhurandhar' presents a complex picture where critical accusations of propaganda are being countered by undeniable commercial success, particularly in regions where its themes are most politically sensitive. The film's performance underscores a clear disconnect between certain critical narratives and mainstream audience choice, setting the stage for continued debate as its sequel approaches.
