Mumbai's Sahar Police have filed an FIR following a complaint by a make-up artist from Bollywood producer Rhea Kapoor's team. The artist alleged that rented gold jewellery, valued at Rs 1.3 crore, which she was transporting from India to the US for Kapoor's appearance at the Met Gala, was stolen during the journey.
Complainant's Statement
The 41-year-old complainant stated to the police that she had worked with Kapoor for the past seven years. She and the rest of the team were to accompany Kapoor for the event scheduled on April 29. Two pairs of gold earrings were rented from jewellers in India for Kapoor to wear at the gala.
One pair, set with emeralds and diamonds, was worth Rs 66 lakh. The other pair, featuring Zambian emeralds, was valued at Rs 69 lakh. The complainant carried both pairs in a box inside her handbag.
Journey and Discovery of Theft
On April 27, the team boarded a flight from Mumbai International Airport. The first leg was from Mumbai to Dubai, followed by a flight to New York. They landed in New York City on April 28 around 5:30 pm and proceeded to a hotel.
Upon checking in, the complainant opened the box to hand it over to a team member, only to find both pairs of earrings missing. According to police, the total value of the stolen jewellery is Rs 1.35 crore.
Legal Action
After returning to Mumbai, the complainant lodged a police complaint. Sahar Police have registered an FIR and are investigating the theft.
