A team from the Abhayam 181 women helpline successfully reunited a one-year-old girl with her parents on Mother's Day in Ahmedabad. Officials reported that the child had been kept by her grandmother after a domestic disagreement with the parents.
Helpline Intervention
A counsellor from the helpline stated that a woman from a western area of the city called for assistance. The caller informed the helpline that her daughter was in the custody of her mother-in-law. Approximately six months ago, after a domestic quarrel, the mother-in-law had taken the child and expelled the caller and her husband from the house. When the mother attempted to retrieve her daughter, she faced physical aggression from other in-laws.
Legal Awareness and Resolution
The counsellor elaborated that the in-laws were informed of their legal obligations and advised to hand over the child. They were clearly told that parents have the primary right over their child and that the daughter could not be held hostage due to a domestic dispute. The in-laws eventually agreed to resolve the conflict and returned the girl to her parents. The counsellor expressed happiness that the reunion occurred on Mother's Day, making the occasion even more special.
