In a disturbing incident in Bathinda, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a retired home guard have been arrested along with a third individual for the alleged sexual harassment and assault of a 24-year-old orchestra performer. The victim, who works with a local orchestra group, filed a complaint at the Bathinda Sadar police station, leading to the arrests.
Details of the Incident
According to the police, the accused had been harassing the woman for several months. They allegedly called her repeatedly, made obscene remarks, and threatened her when she resisted. The situation escalated when the three men allegedly assaulted her at a secluded location. The victim managed to escape and reported the matter to the police.
Arrests and Charges
The police identified the accused as ASI Balwinder Singh, posted at the Bathinda police lines, retired home guard Gurdial Singh, and a third man, identified as Ravi Kumar. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for sexual harassment, assault, and criminal intimidation. The trio was produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bathinda, Dr. Nanak Singh, confirmed the arrests and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted. He stated, "We have taken the matter seriously and will ensure that the accused are punished. The victim's safety is our priority."
Victim's Ordeal
The victim, in her statement to the police, narrated how the accused had been stalking her for months. She claimed that ASI Balwinder Singh used his position to intimidate her, while the other two assisted him. The harassment turned physical when they forced her into a vehicle and assaulted her. She said she feared for her life and decided to speak out after gathering courage.
Local women's rights activists have condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the accused. They have also called for better security measures for women in the entertainment industry.
