Assam businessman's bridge birthday party for wife sparks outrage

An Assam businessman has landed in hot water after a video of him celebrating his wife's birthday on a busy bridge went viral, triggering widespread outrage on social media. The incident took place on a bridge in Tinsukia district, where the man, identified as Manoj Agarwal, allegedly blocked traffic to host a lavish party for his wife.

Video shows bridge turned into party venue

The video, which has been widely shared on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, shows a decorated section of the bridge with balloons, a cake, and a group of people celebrating. Vehicles can be seen stuck on both sides, with some honking in frustration. The clip captures Agarwal cutting a cake with his wife as guests cheer, while traffic comes to a standstill.

According to local reports, the party was held on the evening of June 23, 2026, causing significant disruption on the bridge, which connects several key areas in Tinsukia. Commuters complained of being delayed for over 30 minutes. The video was reportedly filmed by one of the guests and later posted online, where it quickly drew criticism.

Public outrage and police response

Social media users condemned the act, calling it insensitive and illegal. Many tagged the Assam Police and local authorities demanding action. One user wrote, "This is a public bridge, not a private banquet hall. How can someone block traffic for a birthday party?" Another commented, "The arrogance of the rich knows no bounds. Strict action must be taken."

In response, the Tinsukia police registered a case against Agarwal under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for obstructing a public way and creating a nuisance. Police officials stated that they are also investigating whether any permission was taken for the event. "We have taken cognizance of the viral video and are initiating legal proceedings. No one is above the law," said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

Businessman's defence and community reaction

Agarwal, who runs a local business, reportedly defended his actions, claiming that the celebration was a surprise for his wife and that he did not intend to cause inconvenience. However, his explanation failed to pacify the public, with many calling it a display of entitlement. Local residents also expressed anger, noting that the bridge already faces congestion during peak hours.

The incident has sparked a broader debate about the misuse of public spaces by wealthy individuals. This is not the first such case in Assam; in 2024, a similar incident occurred where a wedding party blocked a highway in Dibrugarh. Activists have urged stricter enforcement of traffic laws and heavier penalties for such violations.

As of now, the police have not made any arrests, but the investigation is ongoing. The video continues to circulate online, with many sharing it as an example of irresponsible behaviour.
