Bill Gates Expresses Regret Over Jeffrey Epstein Association
In a candid address to staff at the Gates Foundation, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates admitted to making a "huge mistake" by associating with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Gates, 70, expressed deep regret that his relationship with Epstein had negatively impacted the philanthropic work of his foundation.
Admission of Affairs and Denial of Crimes
During the town hall meeting, Gates confirmed having extramarital affairs with two Russian women. "I did have affairs, one with a Russian bridge player who met me at bridge events, and one with a Russian nuclear physicist who I met through business activities," he stated. However, he firmly denied any involvement in Epstein's criminal activities, emphasizing, "I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit."
Details from Released Documents
The revelations come amid the release of documents by the US Justice Department, which include:
- Allegations from Epstein in a draft email claiming he assisted Gates with drugs and facilitated illicit trysts.
- Evidence of close friendships and private photos involving Epstein and prominent figures like Gates.
Gates acknowledged that his relationship with Epstein began in 2011, three years after Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution. He admitted to being aware of travel restrictions on Epstein but did not conduct a thorough background check.
Impact on Gates Foundation and Personal Life
Gates apologized for involving Gates Foundation executives in meetings with Epstein, stating, "I apologize to other people who are drawn into this because of the mistake that I made." He revealed that his then-wife Melinda expressed concerns about Epstein in 2013, yet he continued the association for at least another year.
Reflecting on the situation, Gates told staff, "Knowing what I know now makes it, you know, a hundred times worse in terms of not only his crimes in the past, but now it's clear there was ongoing bad behavior."
Foundation's Response
The Gates Foundation confirmed that Gates addressed the Epstein case and other issues at its scheduled twice-yearly town hall event. In a statement to AFP, the foundation said, "Bill spoke candidly, addressing several questions in detail, and took responsibility for his actions."
