No matter how much heat India and Indians face online, within our hearts we know that the country is enriched with culture and values that are incomparable. Now, it seems people who are visiting the country are also realising the stark difference between the images portrayed online and the reality.
British Creator Challenges Negative Online Stereotypes
Jack Heaton, a British digital creator travelling across India recently went viral online for challenging the online stereotypes about the country. In a now-viral Instagram video he titled, 'Social media completely lied to me about India.'
Marina Beach Surprise
In the clip, Heaton visited Marina Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu which is known as the world's second-largest urban beach. He shared his surprise at how clean the area looked compared to the negative image often shown online.
“We are at the second‑largest beach in the entire world. Would you believe that it is in India?” Heaton said while filming the crowded shoreline. He pointed out that despite thousands of people being present, the beach was largely free of rubbish.
“It actually looks really clean. There’s barely any rubbish. There are a few little bits, but not a lot at all,” he added.
Calling it “insanity” he shared his shock that the beach had nearly 10,000 people present and yet minimal waste. He also compared the water quality of the beaches to back home, noting that the water appeared cleaner than what he would usually find on the coast of England.
“I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to tell you it’s crystal clear blue. It’s not the Maldives, guys, but it’s not bad,” he said.
Social Media Reactions
The video quickly gained traction online, sparking conversations about the country's diversity and how it was highlighted online in a negative lens.
- “What a fail! You don't get likes and shares if you don't post dirty things about India mate..” wrote a user.
- “It's a trend to bash India and Indians these days.. the more negatively you speak, the bigger celebrity you are.. there's a saying in my native language, which means - a barking dog does not disrupt heaven, very relatable” added another.
- “Western media will say it’s AI” quipped a user.
