British TV Host Narinder Kaur Faces Backlash Over Gidda Video at Punjabi Wedding
British TV Host Narinder Kaur Backlash Over Gidda Video

British TV presenter Narinder Kaur has found herself at the center of a controversy after a video of her performing gidda, a traditional Punjabi folk dance, at a wedding went viral. Instead of admiration, the clip triggered a wave of targeted criticism against the Indian-origin broadcaster.

Kaur's Emotional Post

Kaur, a commentator and broadcaster, shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), expressing how it felt good to reconnect with her roots. She revealed that her parents immigrated to the UK, and over time, she became deeply integrated into British culture, losing touch with parts of her Indian heritage. She emphasized that while integration is important, the cost of losing one's culture is often overlooked.

In her post, Kaur reflected on how different her life might have been if her parents had not moved to the UK. "Different path, different story… still figuring out how to reclaim this one," she wrote.

Backlash from Users

The post quickly gained traction, but instead of support, Kaur faced a barrage of attacks. Many users criticized her for missing her culture and suggested she return to India.

One user wrote, "You can easily return to the motherland. Problem is... you don't want to because it's full of Indians and the streets smell of human faeces." Another added, "Makes me wonder sometimes—what would life have looked like if my parents hadn't come to the UK? Go and find out. All you do is disparage every person and aspect of the UK that isn't connected to or subscribed to the cult of diversity. It's insulting."

A third user advised, "Narinder I think you know what the answer is. If you don't feel deep down in your heart that you don't belong here, then you need to act on that. I am sure you will have a lovely new life in India."

Previous Controversy

This is not the first time Kaur has sparked debate. In 2023, she went viral for asking the British royal family to return the Kohinoor diamond to India during an interview. She described the diamond as a symbol of colonization and bloodshed, questioning why an Indian child had to travel to the UK to see it.

"The Kohinoor diamond was founded in Indian soil. It represents to the British their dark brutal colonial history. They have NO BUSINESS in continuing to benefit from colonisation. The UN recognises the right of a country to reclaim its treasures," she wrote in an X post.

Kaur's Career

Kaur has been known for her vocal support of Indian culture and issues. She first appeared on the second series of Big Brother in 2001, later becoming a presenter for dating series like Undercover Lovers, and ventured into broadcasting with Good Morning Britain and GB News.
