Chappell Roan Deletes Social Media, Calls It a Privilege

Chappell Roan has removed all social media applications from her phone indefinitely. The singer recently explained her decision to step away from online platforms, acknowledging that this move stems from a position of privilege.

Chappell Roan on Why She Deleted Social Media

During a recent appearance on the 'Elton John Impact Awards' podcast, Roan disclosed that she has chosen to delete all social media from her phone for the time being. When asked about her motivation, she stated, "I just delete it when it becomes too much and keep it moving." She added that dealing with online hate can be overwhelming, saying, "It's very... disheartening sometimes to really go into the comment section."

The 28-year-old musician further remarked that "at the end of the day, no matter what anyone says about me online or in person, it's not gonna stop people like Elton [John] and I [from] donating money, donating time, writing about things that matter to us."

Chappell Roan on Being Privileged Enough to Delete Social Media

Discussing the matter, Roan noted that she is currently in a position where she can easily delete social media accounts and step away from that space voluntarily. However, she acknowledged that many artists have become dependent on these platforms, making it challenging to separate their artistic identity from online presence while maintaining a positive image.

"But that's hard for a lot of artists because, if you really rely on social media to fuel your momentum, that can be really disheartening, and it can feel very hopeless. I'm in a very privileged position where I can be like, 'I'm not gonna be on this, and I'll be fine.' But not everyone is like that," she concluded.

Over the years, Roan has frequently discussed her desire to stay away from social media. In a previous interview last year, she talked about leaving social media and having to remind herself not to read what was written about her online, as it would have upset her significantly more.
