Charlize Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2004 for her role in Monster, where she played serial killer Aileen Wuornos and gained 30 pounds. For Tully, she gained nearly 50 pounds. The actress candidly discussed the hard work and less glamorous aspects of weight transformation with People in 2018.
Age and Weight Loss Challenges
Theron noted that losing weight at 42 was much harder than at 27. After Monster, she lost 30 pounds by skipping three meals. But with age, shedding excess weight became nearly impossible. She said, "My body flipped me off quite a bit. It's just way different when you're older." She also dealt with depression for the first time due to processed foods.
Weight Gain for Tully
For Tully, Theron played a mother of three who just gave birth. She ate potato chips everywhere: in her car, bathroom, kitchen, and trailer. She acknowledged that mothers gain weight during pregnancy and face judgment. The hardest part was the impact of processed food on her mood, leaving her lethargic and tired.
Struggles to Lose Weight
Theron called her doctor saying, "I think I'm dying because I cannot lose this weight." The doctor replied, "You're over 40. Calm down. Your metabolism is not what it was." Her weight loss journey took a year and a half.
Fitness Routine
Theron incorporates Pilates, power yoga (two 90-minute classes weekly), spinning up to four times a week, and tennis. She avoids alcohol and eats green salads and juice daily. She believes in enjoying exercise to stay fit without realizing it.
