Influencer’s Viral Video Highlights Cultural Divide in Holiday Activities
During her trip to Lake Placid, New York, content creator Palak Wahi noticed a stark contrast in how Indians and Americans spend their holidays. Her Instagram video, posted on @povpalak, shows Americans cycling, running, swimming, and hiking, while she notes that in India, holidays often involve sleeping in and indulging in heavy breakfasts like chole bhature and pav bhaji.
Wahi emphasizes that movement has become a routine part of life for many Americans, allowing them to fit in morning exercise before their day begins. She does not criticize either approach but finds the difference intriguing.
Start Small: Wahi’s Advice for Building Fitness Habits
In the caption, Wahi asks, “Just like you wake up, brush your teeth, take a bath, every day without fail, why won’t you treat movement similarly?” She advocates starting with small, achievable goals, such as a 20-minute walk, to build consistency. She notes that many of her Indian friends have begun planning long runs on holidays, signaling a gradual shift.
Wahi encourages viewers to try incorporating movement into their next holiday, saying, “Maybe the next time there’s a holiday, try taking out 20 mins of your time to just move and see what that makes you feel like.”
Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users
The video garnered diverse responses. Many users agreed with Wahi’s message, with comments like “Can’t agree more!” and “Love taking out time for health during vacation.” Others pointed out practical challenges in India, such as lack of open spaces and extreme weather. One user from Mumbai noted, “We need more open spaces in India. I stay at Mumbai, and have no accessible parks I can go to for a run.” Another commented, “Weather is a big challenge in India to do this.”
Despite the debate, Wahi’s observation has sparked a broader conversation about balancing relaxation and fitness during holidays.
