Acclaimed veteran actress Deepti Naval recently took a trip down memory lane, sharing a throwback magazine cover from 1981 that featured herself alongside renowned star Shabana Azmi and the late Smita Patil. The post, shared on Instagram, celebrated an era in Indian cinema when powerful female performers were redefining storytelling.
A Nostalgic Tribute to Parallel Cinema
Deepti fondly described the cover as representing the 'year of the women.' In her caption, she wrote, '1981 - The Year of the Woman!' The three actresses were a formidable force in the 'parallel cinema' movement of the 1970s and 1980s. Together, they broke barriers of the traditional 'damsel in distress' formula, replacing it with nuanced and complex characters.
Deepti Naval's Illustrious Career
Deepti made her debut in 1978 with Shyam Benegal's film Junoon and later played a lead role in Ek Baar Phir (1980). She became a prominent figure in 1980s parallel cinema, starring in films like Kamla and Ankahee. Starting with Chashme Buddoor in 1981, she was often cast alongside Farooq Sheikh, and they became an iconic on-screen couple of the early 1980s. Their collaborations included Chashme Buddoor, Saath Saath, Kissi Se Na Kehna, Katha, Rang Birangi, and Faasle.
After taking a break in the 1990s, Deepti returned in the 2000s with social dramas such as Bawandar, Firaaq, Leela, Memories in March, and Listen... Amaya. Most recently, she appeared in the 2025 crime thriller Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders, directed by Honey Trehan, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Chitrangada Singh, with a special appearance by Radhika Apte.
Another Throwback Moment
In March, Deepti shared another nostalgic moment on social media. She posted sepia-toned photographs in a camera reel format, showing her seated indoors holding a camera, exuding a calm and introspective presence. The simple caption read: 'Another time . . .'
