Dharmesh Yelande on Emotional Backstories in Dance Reality Shows
Dharmesh Yelande on Backstories in Dance Shows

Dancer and choreographer Dharmesh Yelande believes that emotional backstories in dance reality shows resonate only when they are genuine. He asserts that fabricated narratives detract from the essence of the performance, undermining the art form itself.

Dharmesh's Perspective on Emotional Narratives

Sharing his balanced viewpoint, Dharmesh says, “Initially, I used to like it because I used to connect with their stories.” However, he acknowledges the shifting preferences of today’s audiences. “I understand that now some people feel they want to see more dance and fewer stories,” he adds, reflecting the evolving expectations of viewers.

Authenticity is Key

Dharmesh draws a clear line when it comes to authenticity. According to him, the problem lies with fabricated emotional narratives. “I don’t like it if the stories are fake,” he states. He elaborates, “Some contestants have real stories, and I would like to hear them. I also feel there is an audience for that as well — people who enjoy hearing these stories along with the dance.” This nuanced view suggests that genuine stories can enhance the performance while fake ones diminish it.

Reflections on Bollywood Choreography

Beyond television, Dharmesh reflects on his brief stint with Bollywood choreography. He worked on the film Tees Maar Khan after being offered the opportunity by renowned choreographer Farah Khan. He recalls, “Farah ma’am gave me that opportunity. And when I did that, I realised that I am not made for film choreography. I don’t have much interest in that area, and after that I never took up any other films.” This realization led him to focus on dance reality shows and other avenues where his passion truly lies.

In conclusion, Dharmesh Yelande emphasizes the importance of authenticity in emotional storytelling within dance competitions. He believes that while audiences appreciate genuine narratives, fake stories can harm the integrity of the performance. His experience with Bollywood further highlights his dedication to staying true to his artistic inclinations.
