A 38-year-old divorcee residing in Nava Vadaj, Ahmedabad, has lodged a police complaint alleging that a man deceived her by claiming to be divorced and repeatedly raped her under the pretext of marriage. The complaint was filed with Madhvpura police on Friday under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means.
Background of the Complainant
In her complaint, the woman stated that she lives with her mother and younger son. She was separated from her husband in 2023. Seeking a fresh start, she created a profile on a matrimonial platform in November 2025 with the intention of remarrying.
How the Accused Approached
The accused, a resident of Surat, contacted her through the platform, claiming that he too was divorced and wished to remarry. The two first met in December 2025 at Kankaria in Ahmedabad. Subsequently, they met again in Surat, where the man took her to his neighborhood and showed her his house from a distance.
The Alleged Fake Wedding
According to the complaint, they later visited a temple in Visnagar. The woman alleged that at the temple, the man accepted her as his wife after performing a ceremonial wedding, including applying vermilion to her forehead. This act gave her the belief that they were lawfully married.
Repeated Assaults Under False Promises
Soon after the temple ceremony, the man called her to a hotel in Shahibaug and had physical relations with her, promising to formalize the marriage. She claimed that he called her to the same hotel five to seven times, each time assuring her of marriage and then having sex. The last such meeting allegedly occurred on April 13.
Discovery of the Deception
When the woman tried to contact the accused on April 18, a different person answered the phone. On April 20, she traveled to his residence in Surat and discovered that he was already married and had two children. A heated argument ensued with his wife, after which the woman called the emergency number 112. Police from Kapodra police station took her statement before she returned to Ahmedabad.
Legal Action
The Madhvpura police have registered the complaint and are investigating the matter. The case highlights the vulnerability of individuals seeking partners through matrimonial platforms and the misuse of such services for deceitful purposes.
