Dwyane Wade, the NBA legend, has been a steadfast pillar of support for his wife, acclaimed actress Gabrielle Union, as she navigated numerous personal challenges. After years of grappling with fertility issues, Union has now candidly discussed her difficult experience with perimenopause.
Gabrielle Union's Perimenopause Struggle
In a heartfelt interview with PEOPLE a few months ago, Gabrielle Union opened up about how perimenopause severely impacted her life. She described the condition as isolating and detrimental to her sense of womanhood. "All of it can feel very isolating and you can feel like less of a woman, especially as a Black woman where our hair is our crown. There's literally the CROWN Act and I'm like, uh, my crown looks more like a barrette at this moment..." she said.
The Being Mary Jane actress detailed the array of symptoms she endured: "It was the hot flashes, the night sweats that could happen at any time of day, brain fog, mood changes, ongoing sadness, anxiety that felt more like terror, hair loss, and then random weight gain..." She added that the emotional toll became overwhelming when she realized the full extent of her condition. "That's when it really hit home for me," she shared.
Early Onset and Fertility Journey
Union has been vocal about entering perimenopause in her 30s, much earlier than many of her friends and peers. She has also been open about her fertility struggles and her decision not to pursue surrogacy, as she wanted to experience being "publicly pregnant" in the entertainment industry. Her husband, Dwyane Wade, played a crucial role during this time, encouraging her to stop trying to conceive after multiple miscarriages.
Dwyane Wade's Unwavering Support
The NBA star has been a constant source of strength for Union through all the difficult periods. He was instrumental in helping her prioritize her health over pregnancy attempts. Today, the couple is enjoying one of the happiest phases of their lives, though they keep their family life private, sharing moments with their daughter, Kaavia Wade. Union also faced the recent loss of her father, and Wade has remained by her side throughout this grief, continuing to offer his unwavering support.
This story highlights the importance of partnership and resilience in the face of health and personal challenges.
