The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday clarified that the adviser to Bangladesh's Prime Minister had chosen to return to Dhaka on his own accord, after being briefly questioned by immigration officials at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. The official was subsequently allowed entry after confirming the purpose of his visit.
Immigration Query and Clearance
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the adviser was queried by immigration officials at Delhi airport and was subsequently permitted entry after re-confirming that his visit was to attend a multilateral meeting. The spokesperson emphasized that the adviser was not denied entry or subjected to any undue process, and his return was a personal decision.
Background of the Incident
The incident drew attention after reports emerged that the adviser had been detained or questioned. The MEA clarified that the adviser was only asked routine questions regarding his travel documents and purpose of visit, which is standard procedure for all foreign nationals. Once the purpose was verified, he was allowed to proceed. However, the adviser later decided to return to Bangladesh voluntarily.
The MEA did not specify the nature of the multilateral meeting or the adviser's identity, but sources indicated it was a scheduled diplomatic engagement. The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi was informed of the developments.
Diplomatic Protocols
Diplomatic sources noted that such queries are not unusual and are part of standard immigration checks. The MEA reiterated that India maintains a transparent and respectful process for all foreign visitors. The adviser's decision to return was not prompted by any denial of entry or harassment.
The incident comes amid ongoing bilateral engagements between India and Bangladesh, which have strengthened ties in recent years. Both nations have emphasized mutual cooperation and diplomatic dialogue.
