Graham Norton Wins Legal Case Against Social Media Platform for Deepfake Posts

According to the Irish Independent, the reality TV star was recently engaged in a legal battle with a social media platform. The case was initiated to compel the platform to reveal the identities of account users who published false claims about him and his family’s health online. Norton is seeking documents from the social media platform to identify who operates the Westminster Wire page.

Calling the posts “deeply upsetting,” Norton won the case and will soon receive the identification details of those who run the account. Additionally, he plans to pursue a case in the High Court in England against the individuals operating the aforementioned account.

What Are the Posts About Graham Norton That Caused the Issue?

In recent months, these ‘deeply upsetting’ posts have circulated about the Bandon native, his family, and their health. Deepfake technology has been used, as per the report, for many of these posts claiming Norton is extremely ill. Many other posts falsely claimed that his 94-year-old mother, who is healthy and alive, has passed away. A statement from Norton, as he visited the court in California for the case, mentioned, “My 94-year old mother uses Facebook and has been confronted with reports of her own death.”

Additionally, many of his family members, friends, fans, and co-workers have seen such posts, causing everyone deep distress. Norton has had to spend time debunking the fake news being spread online about him and his family on multiple occasions. The posts have mainly been targeted towards his husband’s alleged ill health and his mother as well.

Another statement read, “In order to bring proceedings, I must first identify those responsible. Without this information, I am unable to bring my claim or obtain the injunctive relief I urgently need to stop the ongoing harassment.”

According to court filings, Norton has been targeted by the anonymous account multiple times using AI technology and deepfakes. Often times these posts have put him in scenarios that are falsely created with no evidence, however, are being shared online as ‘news.’
