Actor Harsh Nagar Opens Up About TV Production Pressures and OTT Competition
Harsh Nagar on TV Production Pressures and OTT Competition

Actor Harsh Nagar, who gained fame as Anant Desai in Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 and currently plays Police Inspector Akash Singh in Pati Brahmachari, has shared his insights on the mounting pressures of television production and the shifting entertainment landscape.

The Scale of Daily Soap Production

Speaking candidly about the demands of daily soaps, Harsh highlighted the enormous volume of content Indian television produces compared to global standards. He noted that producing a 30-minute show six days a week results in nearly 13 hours of content per month, which he likened to making three films of a certain scale every single month. Drawing a comparison with Hollywood, he pointed out that while Hollywood produces 26 episodes in six months, Indian TV churns out over 150 episodes in the same period. This massive quantity makes maintaining quality extremely challenging.

Changing Audience Habits

The actor explained that the battle for viewership has transformed significantly. In the past, television was the easiest form of entertainment during leisure time. However, today, people have access to OTT platforms, web series, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp status, and creator content, all vying for the same one to two hours of free time. He emphasized that television itself has become smarter, with OTT and YouTube running on the same device, intensifying the competition.

Financial Stakes and Ratings

Harsh noted that financial stakes are directly tied to ratings. A drop in TRP leads to reduced revenue for the channel, the producer, and ultimately cuts in budgets for sets and actors. This makes producing the show even more difficult. He believes television's real competition now comes from digital platforms, as both are fighting for the same personal time on phones and smart TVs.

Global Competition and Budget Constraints

According to Harsh, people are increasingly watching anime, foreign shows, and OTT content. Television must deliver international-level quality, but with extremely limited budgets. He described the situation as an ocean entering another ocean, highlighting the immense pressure on the industry.

Audience Investment and Resilience

Despite these challenges, Harsh stressed that television still commands deep audience investment when a show connects. He cited his own show, which has 312 episodes and 6 billion views on YouTube, as evidence. Reflecting on the industry's trajectory, he observed that this is the first time television is facing real competition from other mediums. Previously, even a bad show would run for two to three years, but now even a good show ends within that timeframe. He noted that from 1980 until now, TV's TRP only kept rising, and this is the first instance of decline due to competition.

Pride in Indian Television

Despite the challenges, Harsh remains proud of the resilience of Indian television. He stated that even while fighting against Indian content worth crores and Hollywood content worth hundreds of crores, the industry continues to entertain the audience. This, he believes, showcases the artistry and skill of the Indian TV industry. He concluded by noting that where this balance will settle remains unknown.

Harsh Nagar has also featured in shows like Kyunkii Tum Hi Ho, Kartik Purnima, and Akoori.
