A Japanese woman residing in Gurgaon has sparked a viral discussion on social media by humorously defending Indian cuisine against common criticisms. She addressed frequent concerns from people who ask, "I might get an upset stomach if I go to India" or "Isn't Indian food kind of risky?" In her widely shared post on X, she argued that digestive issues are not caused by poor hygiene but by overeating and the richness of the food.
Overeating as the Culprit
The woman explained that Indian food is heavy on oil and contains strong spices, which naturally may not sit well with Japanese stomachs. However, she emphasized that the primary problem is that people eat "too much of it," exceeding their stomach's capacity. "I think it's the exact same logic as getting an upset stomach from eating hotpot on a business trip to China?? (Sorry, this analogy only lands for those who get it)," she reasoned. She noted that after a long flight, travelers are exhausted and consume large quantities of oily, heavily spiced dishes back to back, causing the gut to react.
Rejecting Hygiene Blame
The woman expressed frustration with the assumption that stomach troubles stem from unsanitary conditions. "That really rubs me the wrong way," she wrote. She pointed out that restaurants recommended by locals or expats are usually legitimate establishments, making it unlikely that hygiene is the issue. "I get it, it's delicious, I totally get it! Especially when you're on a business trip or something, the restaurants that locals or expats take you to are usually legit places, so it doesn't really feel like 'unsanitary conditions' are the reason for tummy troubles," she added.
Practical Advice for Travelers
She offered two key recommendations for business travelers and tourists. First, avoid overeating: "Absolutely do not try to match the portions that Indians or Japanese expats living there eat! If you could hold back a bit at first...!" Second, she suggested inserting breaks between Indian meals, such as eating familiar, gentle foods like Japanese or Korean cuisine once every three meals (about once a day).
Social Media Reactions
Many users agreed with her perspective. One user commented, "You just nailed it. Whichever part of the world you eat, never eat beyond 85% of full stomach. That's the basic thumb rule." Another added, "Your body actually healing after eating Indian curries. Turmeric etc are anti-inflammatory. The typical Western diet is low fiber compared to Indian meals. Microbiome mismatch: your stomach needs a different set of bacteria to digest. Soluble vs. insoluble fibre: Indian food is Soluble." A third user quipped, "I see. Hot pot, coming tomorrow, huh? lol."
