Johny Lever Reveals Childhood Trauma, Attempted Suicide at 13

Johny Lever, widely regarded as the 'King of Comedy' in Hindi cinema, has left audiences enchanted with his impeccable screen presence and live performances for decades. However, behind the laughter lies a deeply traumatic past that the actor recently opened up about in a candid interview.

Witnessing Murder at Age Seven

In a conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, Lever recalled a disturbing childhood memory from his days growing up in Dharavi. He revealed that he witnessed his first murder when he was just seven years old and studying in Class 3. "Someone had thrown someone and murdered them. Although talking about these things doesn't feel good, I have witnessed all of this," he shared.

Attempting Suicide at 13

The actor also disclosed that he went to the railway tracks to commit suicide at the age of 13. Speaking in Hindi, he said, "I had difficulties when I was younger. I have my family to take care of. Food would only be available if I worked. When my father drank, he would lose his sense of judgement. He was formerly a notorious rowdy. I had thrown away his weapons so many times."

He recounted the emotional moment: "I went to a railway track to commit suicide when I was 13 years old. I had had enough of my dad. I proceeded to the track and the train approached. I quickly left the trail when my three younger sisters' faces suddenly materialised in front of me, asking, 'What will happen to us?'"

Music as Refuge

After stepping away from the tracks, music became his solace. "It must be around 6.45 pm or 7 pm. After getting up, I moved closer to a barbershop where music was playing. I sat on the bench that was behind the store," he recalled. That moment marked a turning point, helping him move away from dark thoughts.

A Storied Career

Despite a painful childhood, Lever has acted in over 300 to 350 films and boasts a net worth of approximately Rs 277 crore. His last appearance was in 'Housefull 5'. His journey from the slums of Dharavi to becoming a comedy legend is a testament to his resilience.

This story is a reminder that even those who bring joy to millions often carry hidden scars. Lever's honesty about his struggles offers inspiration to many facing similar hardships.
