Produced under the Dreams on Screen Productions banner, the film features Prashanth Murali in the lead and has been praised for tackling a sensitive social issue with sincerity and emotional resonance.
A strong start for Jomy Jose Kaiparrett
Winning a prestigious critics' award for a first feature is a notable milestone for any filmmaker, and 'Karuthal' has helped Jomy Jose establish his presence in Malayalam cinema. Released on February 6, 2025, the film received encouraging feedback from audiences both in Kerala and overseas territories, including the United States and Ireland. The production was filmed across multiple locations in Kerala, while key portions were also shot abroad.
What set 'Karuthal' apart was its focus on contemporary social concerns presented through a deeply emotional lens. The film explores the loneliness and emotional needs of ageing parents who long to have their children close to them during the later stages of life. Speaking about the recognition, Jomy Jose expressed his gratitude, stating that receiving such an honour for his debut effort was immensely rewarding. He credited his background in short filmmaking, along with the unwavering support of family and friends, for helping him bring the project to fruition.

The screenplay, dialogues, and cinematography for 'Karuthal' were handled by acclaimed cinematographer Sabu James. Editing duties were undertaken by Sandeep, while Anit P. Joy composed the background score. The film's music was created by Johnson Mangazha and Shaiju Kelandara, with lyrics penned by Jose Kaiparrett and Smis. Vocals were provided by Praseetha Chalakudy, Kester, Pradeep Palluruthy, Binduja Prem, and Smis.
Sanju Simon Mackil served as the Executive Producer of the project, while Mathew Mappillette, Shalin Sheejo Kurien Pazhayampallil, Tommy Joseph, and Jo Stephen came on board as co-producers. Production responsibilities were overseen by Stephen Chettikkan, with Robin Stephen heading the art department. Bailon Abraham coordinated the production, while makeup duties were managed by Punalur Ravi and Anoop. Music production was supervised by Roshan Mathew.
