King Charles III's recent four-day visit to the United States has reportedly reignited tensions between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The visit, which concluded on April 30, saw the King and Queen Camilla warmly interact with President Donald Trump, a figure who has spent years publicly criticizing both Harry and Meghan.
The optics of the meeting have not sat well with the Duchess of Sussex, and insiders say the fallout has created a noticeable rift between the couple. According to Closer magazine, the tension has been simmering since the King's US visit, with insiders suggesting the couple is not entirely aligned on how to handle the situation.
Why Meghan Markle Is Reportedly Fuming
According to the report, while Harry understands his father's diplomatic responsibilities, the situation has still taken an emotional toll. "Harry is doing his best to stay pragmatic, and anytime questions about why Charles is meeting with Trump come up, he's quick to point out that it's simply part of his father's role," the report claimed. "But he does admit that the whole situation has been keeping him up at night."
Further, Meghan is far less willing to let the matter go quietly. "In her view, this is exactly the kind of situation where Harry should be standing his ground, not making excuses for his father," the report added. "Meghan is fuming and saying it sends the wrong message if they let this go unchallenged. She's taking it very personally and doesn't understand how Harry can simply sit back and try to explain this away."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Reportedly Not Aligned on How to Respond
The situation has reportedly exposed a difference of opinion between the couple. While Meghan wants Harry to take a firmer stance, Harry is said to be focused on protecting what he sees as fragile progress in rebuilding ties with his family, six years after their public falling out.
"Of course, it's tough for Harry to sit on the sidelines while his dad breaks bread with someone who seems to want to have him and his wife thrown out of the country," the report alleged. "And the fact that he's not getting the same level of attention from Charles only makes it worse. Harry is biting his tongue because he knows reacting will only stir up more trouble but it's been very difficult, especially because Meghan does not want to give Charles a pass on this."
The outlet added, "His stance is that they need to keep their eyes on the prize and not do anything that could jeopardize their long-term goal of re-building their relationship with his family."
Trump's History of Criticising Harry and Meghan
The tension is not without context. Trump has never hidden his feelings about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. During a 2022 interview with Piers Morgan, he described Harry as weak and said he was "not a fan" of Meghan from the beginning. He also predicted the couple's marriage would "end, and it'll end bad."
More recently, however, Trump appeared to soften his stance when asked whether he would ever try to deport Harry. "I don't want to do that," the president said. "I'll leave him alone. He's got enough problems with his wife. She's terrible."
The alleged tensions come as Harry continues to insist publicly that he remains committed to public service and to his identity as a royal. "I will always be part of the royal family," he told ITV on April 24 during his trip to Ukraine. "I am here working, doing the things that I was born to do."
With both Harry and Meghan navigating very different emotional responses to the same situation, how the couple ultimately chooses to move forward remains to be seen.
