In a dramatic rescue operation on Monday, members of the LGBTQIA+ community in Bhubaneswar prevented a trans man from taking his own life after a nearly four-hour search along railway tracks. The incident began around 9:30 am when the community came across SOS videos in which the man threatened to jump in front of a train.
Community Mobilizes Swiftly
Approximately 20 transgender individuals, accompanied by railway police personnel, walked nearly 10 kilometers under the scorching sun to trace the man. Many of them did not know him personally but acted immediately upon seeing the distress signals. Meera Parida, president of the All Odisha Transgender and Kinnar Association, said, 'We quickly realized the urgency and activated all our members across Bhubaneswar. We also informed the Government Railway Police, Railway Protection Force, and the Commissionerate Police to ensure coordinated action.'
Rescue and Counseling
By 1:30 pm, one of the search teams located the man near Lingaraj station. Pratap Kumar Sahoo, former chairperson of a government transgender committee, stated, 'Multiple groups were deployed across the tracks. Police verified background details from the videos and traced his phone location. Fortunately, he was found safe near the tracks and taken to Airfield police station for counseling before being handed over to his family.'
Police sources revealed that the trans man, employed with an NGO in Khurda district, was struggling with personal issues. An officer at Airfield police station said, 'His relationship with a girl faced strong opposition from his family, leaving him deeply distressed. We have counseled him and ensured he is safe.'
Broader Support Systems
This incident underscores the importance of community support and mental health awareness. The LGBTQIA+ community's rapid response, combined with police cooperation, averted a tragedy. Authorities urge anyone facing similar distress to seek help from helplines or local support groups.
