Court Documents Confirm Bear as Sole Beneficiary
Late British singer Liam Payne’s nine-year-old son, Bear, has been officially named the sole beneficiary of his father’s estate, valued at $29,007,998, according to court documents cited by People magazine. The ruling ends months of legal uncertainty following Payne’s death in October 2024.
The estate will not be handed over in full immediately. A portion is accessible now, while the remainder is locked in a trust until Bear reaches the age of 18. The trust structure ensures the child’s financial security until adulthood.
Legal Timeline and Administration
Payne died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October 2024. He left no will, which triggered a seven-month legal process to appoint an administrator. In May 2025, the courts appointed Payne’s former partner and Bear’s mother, singer Cheryl, as the estate’s administrator. Documents filed at that time valued the gross estate at $38 million, with net assets around $32.2 million.
Cheryl, who has legal authority over the estate, is responsible for managing the trust and ensuring Bear’s needs are met until he comes of age.
Bear’s Birth and Payne’s Fatherhood Journey
Bear was born on March 22, 2017. Payne announced his arrival on Instagram, writing: “I’m incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it’s a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far. I’m completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this; she’s really made my dreams come true.”
Fatherhood, by Payne’s own account, came with struggles. In an earlier interview with People, he said: “I always wanted to be a young dad. I had my son at a young age, and you think it would be a magical thing, that you’re going to grow up one day into the person you’re supposed to be. But it took a lot to find my footing. I figured, Dad takes care of everyone, that’s what he does, so my thing was to cook.”
Impact and Legacy
The court ruling provides clarity for Bear’s future, ensuring he inherits his father’s wealth despite the absence of a will. The case highlights the importance of estate planning, especially for young parents. Payne’s music legacy continues through his work with One Direction and his solo career, but his most enduring legacy may be the financial security provided for his son.
