In a remarkable achievement for the medical fraternity of Uttar Pradesh, Prof. Dr. Sandeep Mittal, a senior ophthalmologist and former principal of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut, has been honored with the prestigious "Fellow of Royal Surgeons" title by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, United Kingdom. The accolade recognizes his exceptional contributions to ophthalmic care and medical science. The award was conferred during a grand ceremony held on Wednesday, attended by numerous distinguished guests.
Early Career and Academic Journey
Dr. Mittal embarked on his medical journey in 1976 after earning a Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology from S.N. Medical College, Agra. Following his postgraduate studies, he began his professional career as a Pool Officer at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences. He later served as a lecturer in Jhansi before being transferred to LLRM Medical College, Meerut, in 1989, where he would spend the majority of his career.
Service at LLRM Medical College
Selected through the Public Service Commission, Dr. Mittal served as a Reader from 1989 and was promoted to Professor in 1993, a position he held until his retirement in 2020. From 1998 to 2010, he headed the Advanced Ophthalmology Department at LLRM Medical College. Subsequently, he served as Dean and Principal of the institution for three years, contributing significantly to its academic and administrative growth.
Research and Mentorship
Throughout his illustrious academic career, Dr. Mittal has mentored over 200 postgraduate dissertations, published more than 80 scientific papers, and delivered 162 scientific presentations at state, national, and international conferences. Reflecting on his teaching experience, Dr. Mittal humbly remarked that his students taught him as much as he taught them, underscoring his dedication to collaborative learning.
