Sara Gore, the beloved host of NBC New York's real estate show 'Open House' and lifestyle show 'New York Live', made an emotional on-air announcement on Thursday, April 30, revealing that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 49-year-old television personality told viewers during the episode of 'New York Live' that she would be stepping away from her duties to undergo treatment and surgery.
"It just felt right to tell you myself. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I'm going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery," she said. "If I didn't say that I was a little bit scared, I'd be lying."
What Sara Gore said about her diagnosis
Gore disclosed that both her mother and sister had previously battled breast cancer, which meant she had long been aware of her elevated risk. "I always knew I was high-risk. I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready," she stated.
She also spoke candidly about the emotional impact of the diagnosis, even though it was caught early. "For some reason, even when you catch it early because you're doing everything right, it is an emotional blow. I wasn't ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung," she said, her voice breaking with emotion.
Despite the difficulty of the moment, she expressed gratitude for the support surrounding her. "I am exactly where I need to be, and I'm surrounded by incredible doctors, and people who are taking such good care of me at home, thank you," she said. Addressing her colleagues, whom she called "my family here," she added, "I love you. I feel loved. I feel very supported."
How Sara Gore is choosing to face what lies ahead
Gore also shared a deeply personal reflection on what the diagnosis has already taught her. "As hard as this is, I am choosing to believe, at least for me, in this moment in time, that maybe there is a gift in this, even if I don't fully understand what it is yet. I'm working on that part. If anything, it's already a reminder of how precious life is and how important it is to focus on what really matters," she said.
While she did not provide specific details about her treatment plan, she confirmed that she will be taking time to rest and heal. "I'm going to come back better than ever, and I'm going to see you on the other side of this," she told viewers. "Thank you for all you've done."
Gore's announcement has drawn an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues alike, as she embarks on her treatment journey with courage and transparency.
